Week of 3/23/14. All monitored from Fairfield, OH except for the two TSA freqs. Locations and inputs included when noted.

165.2375 $167 - FBI? *See note below.
165.2875 $650 - BATFE Net 1 (166.5375 $650 in) "Radio check on Net 1, how do you copy?"
171.9875 $167 - FBI, Cincinnati FO *Usually only KQC390 with station ID and times. However, did hear a unit calling for a check on Ohio plates.
172.7125 $551 - CBP, Cincinnati IAP
172.9000 $001 - TSA Ch. 7 (169.3000 in), Dayton IAP
172.9000 $002 - TSA Ch. 5, Dayton IAP
173.1500 $167 - FBI, Cincinnati FO

*165.2375 only opens up for one second (no voice); does this several times over the course of each day. I did catch two units in Dayton earlier this week on the frequency, but the NAC was not logged on my recording and I can't confirm that it was the same.

Thanks for posting your logs.

However, 165.2375 MHz has never been an FBI allocation. It has always been a nationwide allocation belonging to Customs & Border Protection (formerly US Customs).

I highly doubt that the FBI would be using that, especially with their NAC. May have been a false NAC, as sometimes pops up with my scanners, both UNiden & GRE.

I agree with your false NAC theory. Had $000 show up with the freq today. $167 also showed up with 165.2875. Seems like the brief hits are what throws it off; I'll have to wait for voice to confirm for sure.

Forgot to add some info on the Cincinnati FO; they have an aircraft based at I69 (Clermont Co.). Tail is N731CL but they use JENA 52 with ATC. Unit ID is CINCINNATI 500.

I've always wondered if the NAC value is sitting in a buffer somewhere in the scanner, and when it receives a P25 transmission, but doesn't get enough info for a new NAC, it just displays what was sitting in the buffer from a previous transmission. Who knows…

NET 1 would generally use $651 as an input...
All repeater use $650 as the output tho

See what you get next-time, might again be one of those Buffer issues

No, just a mistake on my part. I don't recall if I monitored the input NAC, but I did hear them say "Net 1" over the air.

Great Reports....

Which airport was 410.0750 at ?? Seems to be a common Freq for this.
Altho I have begun to see more on 413.1125 from the FAA

No, just a mistake on my part. I don't recall if I monitored the input NAC, but I did hear them say "Net 1" over the air.

Net 1 uses $651
Net 2 uses $652
etc
So you must be near a NET 4 and 5

Hey Bill, I recently heard Net 1 input using $654 and $655 on two different nights.
Different $'s call up the closest repeater that the agent feels would work best for his location.

JENA 52 currently with DAY A/D 118.850 for surveillance work. Shortly after checking in, 172.1875 $167 became active with encrypted traffic. Appears to be a simplex channel.

Some interesting Customs activity in early May.

OMAHA 1 was working surveillance over Columbus and Dayton for several days on 168.8375 $293 (AIR 1). Appears based at KTZR. During one day, heard Dayton attempting contact on 165.2375 $301: "OMAHA, OMAHA, this is SECTOR ALPHA 4712, DNET 3, Dayton." Eventually reached them on AIR 1.

Later that same day, CHARLIE 100 passed an Amber Alert on 165.2375 $301. The more interesting one was even later in the evening when I heard units working the DHL arrivals at CVG on the same freq - I've never heard them on it before and haven't logged them on it since then, either.

172.1875 $167 was active today, possibly in relation to more surveillance work from JENA 52 near Dayton. Heard the following transmission: "CI390 to unit calling Dayton, you're in the clear." No traffic after that.

Something you may want to consider is the reaction time of the scanner. That reaction being, detecting the signal first, decoding into PL, DPL or NAC and then opening the squelch will take a few milliseconds. And between the three a PL is the quickest to decode, then DPL and then a NAC.

I agree about what Chris Parris stated earlier, about the NAC's sitting in a buffer, I too have received false NAC's on my HP-1 when just a blip of a fed freq pops up.
