Here's a quote from the Lindsay Daily Post which talks about their force wanting to go encrypted:

"For instance, the service uses 30-year-old Sabre radios, for which replacement batteries are no longer available. A new system would allow the police to encrypt its radio messages, preventing criminals from listening on scanners, which can be purchased by anyone, the Chief said. The cost of the radios is $42,500, with the plan to upgrade again in 2017. "

And, they probably think that digital modulation is encryption that will dis-allow people with scanners to monitor them. What knuckleheads.

I wonder which Radio Provider Services KL police. And Who advised them of the technical aspects with regards to encryption and pricing. If its digital, it could be digitally encrypted like Kingston, Ontario police. For $42,000 and wonder what one dept could actually upgrade too. hmmm? Have to wait and see. If you were a radio service provider, would u be out for the money, or would u advise them of all the essentials with the different types of encryption and if theres any possible way to listen to it on a scanner. (Apco-25, Voice Inversion, Provoice, Rolling Code Inversion).

Kawartha Lakes PS is a Bell Mobility Radio customer. That kinda makes me think Fleetnet is a possibility. If they do indeed end up on Fleetnet (which I somewhat doubt), they're certainly capable of digital and/or encryption.

Assuming the committee approves their request. That is a lot of money they are asking for, for such a small community.

They are asking for three big $$ items.. It just might be cheaper for them to go with OPP... :)

What kind of encryption does Kingston PD use now?

30 years old my ass. 15 would probably be pushing it. Motorola still makes batteries for them too.
Hey, I chuckled reading that.

My two Sabers are still running strong on NOS /\/\ batteries.

Certainly $42,500 isn't for the whole system?

I can assure you that the radios are in fact 30 years old.

As for BMR, certainly they could go digital off the Fenelon Falls tower.

Are you asking to open up that can of worms? I'm sure its been bantered to death in enough previous threads. Of course it would be cheaper to go OPP, with much larger buying power on a system already up and running.

I'm pretty sure all that the service wants to do is bring them in line with somewhat current technology, and in order to do that, money must be spent. Period. It all depends on what kind of service the community wants.

But the article says they're using Sabers. Sabers aren't that old...IIRC, they were released mid-80's.

HT220's, HT90's or even MX300's would be more likely if they're 30 years old.

I don't believe all their radios are Sabres....I will look into it. But I think what the chief should have said is that their communication system is 30 years old.

I'm not sure what form of encryption they are going, but I'm sure it will be something either impossible or near impossible to monitor, as per my conversations with senior staff.

I believe Lindsay just may be the scanner capital of south-central Ontario, and I think that is a large part of their reasoning.

Well, encryption is becoming the age of radio security now. With cobourg and porthope in northumberland county using voice inversion as a so called type of encryption, i guess now its Kawartha Lakes turn to jump on the band wagon, started the parade of encryption for Central Ontario. Just as what has happened in Eastern Ontario, I believe the only Police Dept operating on VHF analog in the clear is Pembroke, Ontario for the 613 area.

Deep River and Pembroke are the only 2 towns in Renfrew county with there own police force. Deep River apparently is on 150.47 in the clear and as mentioned Pembroke on 142.845 also in the clear. But yeah, how long that stays is beyond me.

Oh well, atleast OPP isn't all encrypted for the time being.

I still got a Beat Repeater and Analog VR's to listen to.
