I was surprised the Smartnet system was alive as long as it was - I thought Moto was trying to kill them all or upgrade them to ASTRO25 systems.

Hopefully more system admins/spenders of taxpayer money are becoming aware of the P25 scam and how it's not the best way to go, in terms of interop, costs, functionality and security.

The new RD system, for example, would've cost a metric sheet ton if they'd gone P25 Phase II (TDMA). A controller is required for P25 Phase II and the cost of the subs would be huge. Same with adding multiple sites throughout the city. Programming is also grossly more complicated (for no good reason).

With this Cap Plus MS, the costs would've been the repeaters (about $3500/each), about $3000/repeater for the Cap Plus MS entitlement, and subs were likely discounted (in quantity) at less than $1000/each. Still less than P25, even with APX900s after basic trunking software enhancements. (Cap Plus MS is included in 7550.)

No trunking controller required and they get TDMA without paying huge money. Audio is better than P25 Phase II, as the APX products don't offer Digital Receive Audio Leveling as a firmware/flash option/enhancement. I'm hoping the ScatCom techs programmed the radios properly.

Overall, upgrading to Cap Plus MS from the old Turdnet simulcast system with MTS2000s was a big change, for the better. Good on CoRD for choosing the best technology for the right price and not spending taxpayer funds on more P25 junk that's not programmed/maintained properly.
