Clay county - where they go

anyone in the area still monitor clay county police? i noticed shortly after they apprehended the three suspects from the edgewood case, they quickly disappeared from the scanner. there is some odd tones on their old frequencies, is that the sheriff and what kind of radio will pick them up? thanks in advance

If this is the old frequency you're talking about, and it "has odd tones", they likely still use it, but switched to full Encryption. I can't confirm 100% since I don't live in Clay county. IF this is the case, no scanner will be able to pick it up.

Side note I forgot to mention, if you're listening on an old Analog scanner (not sure when this happened), they switched to DMR/Digital as you can see above. There are quite a few DMR scanners, which you can read about here.

thanks RT, a friend told me wayne county which is south of Clay has went to encryption as well, so much for listening. my home county of richland has spent some bucks on p25, so hopefully they don't go that way anytime soon.

P25 Encryption is much, much more expensive than DMR. Most Motorola UHF DMR radios come with Encryption (the 7000E and 5000E series both do, which is a popular radio amongst many Illinois agencies that use DMR). Most agencies on simplex/conventional repeater DMR choose not to use them, because (in my experience) adding Encryption decreases the range significantly because of the amount of data passed. Encryption also decreases interop abilities in some areas.

I can't speak for all P25 radios, because there's many manufacturers that get used around here, but from what I've seen most don't include encryption (could be wrong!), and it's between $500-800 per radio to add it, and thousands per dispatch console.

We can all hope everything stays in the clear though. Eventually there won't be anything left..

curious what edgewood case your talking about?? The city of edgewood or something else?

Wayne county as well as the city and county of mount vernon all have went to full encryption. Its only time untill everyone is encrypted

Do you know if any of the other Wayne County sites are on air?
We only have 1 site listed in the database. Have you noticed any other talkgroups

I was near Clay County and the Clay County ambulance DMR is in the clear. I heard a couple of transmissions on Clay County Sheriff traffic in the clear. The transmissions were to short in duration to determine who was transmitting and how much traffic is not encrypted.
