IDAHO SPRINGS - State Patrol says four people are dead after a minivan carrying 15 people believed to be illegal immigrants crashed, prompting the driver to flee on foot.

Colorado State Patrol says the 1998 Dodge minivan ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree causing it to roll over.

The crash occurred around 2 p.m. on Tuesday on I-70 between exit 240 and 241.

Eastbound I-70 is shut down and traffic is being rerouted through the town of Idaho Springs.

Most of the passengers were ejected out of the sliding door in the van, authorities say.

The driver fled on foot and dogs are being brought in to look for him, according to the State Patrol.

Troopers say about 10 people have been transported to St. Anthony's for treatment.

The extent of the injuries to the other passengers was not immediately known.

9NEWS and 9NEWS.com will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

If he stays out all night, he will be stiff, and still dressed--in snow covered camo. Talk about a good reason to give up

I'll withhold any further politically motivated comments, but it would be along the same lines as Tancredo said about Miami yesterday.

Is anyone else impressed with CSP selection of cruisers for the mountain troopers?

Driver Captured

The driver fled on foot and dogs were brought in to look for him, according to the State Patrol.

Authorities say the driver ran up an embankment and into the high country, leaving footprints which they tracked.

The suspected driver was captured just before 6 p.m. and is in custody of immigration officials, according to State Patrol.

Troopers say the crash fits the pattern of human smuggling, but that has not been confirmed.

Authorities say immigration officials are also investigating the crash.

Troopers say 10 people - nine adults and one minor - were transported to St. Anthony's hospital in Denver for treatment. Nine of the injured passengers are male and one is female.

The extent of the injuries to the other passengers ranged from minor to critical, but it does not appear any of the injuries are life-threatening.

I actually thought my Camaro did better in the snow than the Fords. Just had to keep a short leash on the gas and it did surprisingly good....but the only Camaros you'll see on the road now are issued to the PIO section out of HQ, all the road Camaros have been retired.
