I have a Pro-97 and it has 1000 channels (10 banks of 100) but I've heard people say that you really only have like 4-14 real channels that are usable. What is that about?

Simple. Be suspicious of what people tell you.

I'll start off by saying I don't own a Pro 97, but I've seen it. Its advertised as a 1000 channel analog trunking scanner. That to me says it holds 1000 channels. What your "sources" mean by 4-14 real channels is beyond me.

I've read tons of questionable information spewed on this website and others by some pretty unqualified and often overzealous ppl.

Fully agreed. I didn't know what the hell they were talking about and if a company was to advertise something having 1000 channels but it really only had 40 I would think they would not sell very much

I have three Pro-97s and they all hold 1000 channels.

It could be that the people you are talking about only find 4-14 frequencies to be of use.

Perhaps I can be of help.

He might be referring to this post...
http://www.radioreference.com/forums/showpost.php?p=947607&postcount=1

If that's what he's talking about, what I meant was that while trunked and conventional frequencies can both be used in one bank, while the scanner is locked on to a conventional freq, something good / important may be missed on the trunked system. In other words, having both in a bank cuts down on what you may hear. I didn't mean that that's only how many channels were available per bank.

However, if this isn't what bballjh was talking about then I'll just shut up and curl up back in my corner LOL :D :)

I read on here that some people don't use the zero channel. They start the frequancies at the "1". For instance: Bank 400 would not be used but 401 would be.

I don't think you got the whole story. The freqs. in EDACS systems MUST start in channel 1 for the system to work properly. Channel 0 can be used for anything else.
