Cleveland radio changes?

The U.S. Department of Justice plans to announce today that Cleveland will receive a $6 million grant, according to Sen. George V. Voinovich's office. The federal money will allow Cleveland to tie in its radio system with other communities throughout Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina and Ashtabula counties during emergencies, said David Fitz, spokesman for Mayor Jane Campbell. z

Does this mean Cleveland's finally going to upgrade their proprietary Motorola system? Or is this something new?

Does anyone have any other info?

Considering they're gonna have to at least re-band within the next few years, They might as well upgrade the entire system.

Rumors have it that it will be a P-25 system. I've also heard rumors about the Cleveland, Columbus, and Findlay systems being sub-systems of Ohio MARCS. Just like the Detroit system is a sub-system of the Michigan state system.

I heard on another post that noone was going to be allowed to be a sub-system of MARCS. I am not for sure on that but I think it would be great if they let local areas be sub-systems.

It was from you post FPO about the Deleware County 800 system. Also I was in school with someone from ODOT who was in charge of alot of the towers for MARCS since they used alot of ODOT's towers. He informed me since they were starting digital they were not going to let any analog systems on for sure.

6 Million woulnt be near enough for a full system upgrade. The money is for some P25 radios and base units. Cleveland wont be upgrading untill 2009. Thats when the Astro Saber radios there using will no longer be supported by Motorola RSS. Steveng

This is not true. Local systems in major metro areas are not being incorporated into MARCS account loading issues. The "sub-systems" urban legend apparently came about because those systems are programmed into some MARCS radios for interoperability purposes, and someone thought they were part of MARCS.

There really is no such thing as a "sub-system" with a trunked system. Either you're part of the system or you're not. If it's a multi-site simulcast (like Detroit, or Columbus for that matter), that simulcast is handled by the system the same as any other SmartZone site.
