I am trying to program my Dad's Pro 93 scanner for him from SC. I am using information from Radio Reference only. If anyone is from Central NY and has any information I need please let me know. He has lost most of his eye sight so I am trying to program the systems and ID's in to this thing. I am not familar with Pro 93 and have never programmed a EDACS system before. I have my VX5R Programming cable and have downloaded the software Win 93. I have a BC246 adn 245xlt and everything here is Motorola type II.

Thanks,

Greg

The EDACS systems must be programmed with thier frequencies in order starting with Channel 1 in the scanner NOT channel 0. Check out NF2G.com/scannist. Dave has a great site for upstate New York. You will want to program the utica trunk system. he will have no probelem hearing that. depending on where he live in Clinton what else he will be able to hear. if he is down in the village he will not be able to hear the Rome system. if he is up on College or prospect hill that should be a problem. With the utica system you will want to program the IDs hes interested in like UPD and NHPD, then Close the bank. there are too many business users and other crap on there.

Channel xx1 - that is, channel 1 in whatever bank. IOW 001, 101, 201, 301, etc. (Some people think that channel 1, when referring to EDACS programming, means you can only program 1 EDACS system - in bank 0.)

I need to clarify this. Can you program more than one EDACS system in each bank? I understand you can not with Moto. Thanks for your help both of you. My Dad lives on Fountain Street so I suspect he will not be able to pick up Rome. So I will not program that in to his scanner.

Again thanks to both of you

Rome's system is very low powered and hard to receive beyond the city limits.

Only one EDACS system can be programmed into each bank.

As Dave said, no, but you can put more than 1 Moto system in each bank, as long as they're separated by at least 1 none-locked-out conventional channel. (At least that's the way I remember it - it's been a while since anyone was talking about it.)

The caveat to multiple Moto systems in the same bank is that they all have to have the same fleetmap (or be Type II) and not have conflicting talkgroups. A SmartZone or OmniLink system would probably work.

When you say no conflicting talkgroups, do you mean they both use the same talkgroup? For my BC246T this is a moot point thankfully. But, I keep a BC245XLT in my truck to listen to and it would be nice to have both of the systems in one bank.

Thanks for all your help. I will program this thing up. Wish I could make sure it is working okay for him prior to sending it back to him but that is not possible. I plan to install the Utica system only. I do not expect knowing the lay of the land around their house that he would hear Rome's system. When I was a kid, we could not hear anything on VHF or Low band VHF so I would not expect him to hear 800.

Again, thanks for all of your help.

What I mean by "conflicting talkgroups" is having the same TG number assigned to different users on different systems.

Thanks. That helps. I for the life of me can not find my VX5R programing cable. I have hunted all over the house. Sure hope I did not throw out that cable. I can get replacement but it is a pain. They use the same cable but it has a mini plug with 2 to 3 contact converter plugged in to the end.

Really? When did they move all those public safety users back off the trunked systems?

Clinton is 15 to 20 miles SE of Rome and about 8 to 10 miles from Utica. He probably won't be able to hear the Rome Edacs system. He might be able to hear the Utica edacs system. Alot of the Public safety is not trunked in Oneida Ct. If he can hear Rome's edacs system with a 800mhz handheld antenna I would be surprised. My parents are from that area and most of my relatives (Vernon, Sherrill, Utica). ;)

Yeah most likely you can forget Rome's sytem on Fountain Street, unless he is at the top of Paris Hill. The reason I was asking, was basically that, if he was on top of College Hill or Prospect Hill and there are a few places on Paris Hill where Rome can be heard.

Dave to specifically answer your question about the trunked systems. Utica, New Hartford and Rome still are on their respective systems. Most other PS agencies run off the county VHF conventional system as primary, many maintain their own channels also, some also have a talkgroup on the Utica EDACS system. When JPJ set up the talkgroups on the 4 systems they were designed not to overlap talkgroups, in most cases this is still true. I have found some to the Rome PD talkgroup IDs in use on the utica system for commercial users. The 3 remaining systems (Rome, Utica, Co. Jail) are not connected or linked in anyway. Dave also for your reference the actual (not ULS info) ERP of Rome system is a little over 300W, however, it doesnt have the HAAT of a Pinnicle or State Office towers, its actually fairly well ballanced for portable coverage.
