To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

HT1000 Clone HT1000s?

I have a box full of HT1000s (public safety surplus) that I am trying to program for a non-profit that has a valid business license.

Bought an old laptop with a real serial port which is running MS-DOS. I have the software and the programming cable (Bluemax).

I started with one radio. Was able to read it, modify the codeplug, and write it back. No problem.

Now I am trying to copy that codeplug to all these other radios. I naively tried "Program Data into Radio" and was told that the serial didn't match. Ooops.

Oh look ... I need to use "Clone" instead. Sure, no problem. Except I cannot get it to work.

I hit "F5 Clone" then "F8 continue", and "F8 continue". I get "Reading Codeplug", radio resets, "Writing Codeplug" comes up and progresses to first bar, then it sits there and I get an error box.

Is there something I am doing wrong? Or am I going to have to program each of these radios one at a time?

Thanks!!

I believe after F5 there a read serial no option then after it grabs the serial of radio attached then you write with f8.

If I hit F5 I get a menu where I can either continue the cloning request (F8) or cancel it (F10).

If I hit F8, it tells me to "Please attach next target radio ..." and again, F8 to continue or F10 to cancel.

I don't see anything about "read serial".

What does the "error box" tell you? FWIW, these old dogs are finicky if they have different models (there were AN, BN, CN and DN) and you can't clone between them, and the firmware versions also could be a problem when cloning.

I'll have to get the exact text when I try again tonight, but it's a generic message that communication failed and it could be "radio off", "low battery", "RIB problem", etc.

The three that I've tried to clone so far are all the same model number (I checked) but I'll have to look at the firmware versions.

After you click on F5 then you have to read the serial number by clicking on F2 then F8. Are all the radios essentially the same model?

I'll fire up my computer and verify and try it on a couple radios.

Once you have the codeplug file loaded on the computer either from the archive directory or you read a radio, from the Get/Save/Clone Menu, click F5, F8, and F8 again, and with the next radio, just a F8 will do the next radio and so on.

I thought that I had a couple "CNs", but that is not the case, all eight of them are "DNs". I do remember that you have to have the same model radio to clone and that is the case across the board for all the Motorola radio series.

The ones I have tried so far are all DNs.

I hit F5, then F8. It tells me to connect next radio and hit F8. I do so, and it reads the radio, says "wait for reset", the radio beeps, then the write progress bar comes up and after a pause goes to the first bar (20%), then it sits and a few seconds later the error box pops up.

RIB PORT COMMUNICATION UNSUCCESSFUL.

PROBABLE CAUSES
Radio turned off.
No radio or radio malfunctioning.
Radio battery low.
Poor connection between radio and RIB.
RIB malfunctioning.

In the dialog box at the upper right it says "Cloning the radio." then "Com port event."

This is a RIBless cable so it's not the RIB. It *could* be the cable, but I am able to read and write the same radio ... just not do the clone.

I highly doubt that the cable is the problem since it is a Bluemax49ers cable. Did you get the RSS from Bluemax49ers? If not what version RSS do you have.

I've seen a similar problem trying to program a Saber, P110 and GP300 radios with a converted old laptop just using DOS. Depending on the processor speed, the problem could be the laptop being too fast for the RSS application. What is the computer's processor speed.

My converted laptop programs and clones the Jedi series radios with no problem. If you want to send me a couple of the radios that you are having the problems, I can see if I have the problem or not.

FYI - I am using the RIB and the RIB cables. I know that won't totally simulate your exact situation, but my set up does work.

If my set up works with your radios, you can send me the whole box of radios, and I will program them for you

Can you read and write an individual radio? If so, why not just build each code plug individually? They are only, maximum, 16 channel radios. 8x radios and 3 days, I could have done each radio manually, and been done already, radios out the door and in the hands of those that need them.

As I've said a couple times, I can read and write just fine. I just can't take the code plug from one radio and clone it to another.

So yes, I am building a code plug for each radio, which means 5 or 10 minutes for each one instead of 1 or 2. It also means that I have many more opportunities to make a mistake in the programming, so I plan to go back and check each one after I'm done with all of them. Right now I'm about halfway done. If I could have cloned them all I would have been done two days ago. But it is what it is, as the saying goes.

This isn't my job, and the radios aren't going to be used until weekend after next. I'll probably get them done tonight or tomorrow night.

I appreciate the offer, but the cost to ship there and back far outweighs the extra time it will take for me to do each one individually.

It's probably a timing issue with this laptop, but if that's the case there is also probably no fix.

I posted because I thought maybe I was missing a step or doing something wrong. Sounds like I am following the correct process.

It does appear that you are.
