Closed mode on pro-96

The pro-96 scanner, while trunking, can operate in closed and open mode. I was trying to find a way to scan just two or three talkgroups. Apparently, to operate in closed mode, just hearing a few talkgroups, I must program control channels in an entire new bank. Otherwise, lockout every single talkgroup except the ones I want to listen to. I am trunk scanning Nashville, so with any other major city, we have a bunch of talkgroups. I was looking for an easier route to just listen to like two or three talkgroups. Any ideas?

If you just put in the few talkgroups you want to hear and put it in closed mode it will only open up on them. If it is a smartzone system, you may want to put the same talkgroups in different banks with other tower sites' control channels.

unfortunately there isn't an easy way to do it.....
if you use win96 and can arrange to have the talkgroups you want to monitor in one bank of the talkgroup listing then you can deactivate the other banks of talk groups and listen to the ones you want.... without win96 it requires some button pushing.... remember to stay in closed mode so the others won't intrude....

Whereas both Thayne and unitcharlie are correct in their responses, I am bothered a little bit by your comment that, "Apparently, to operate in closed mode, just hearing a few talkgroups, I must program control channels in an entire new bank. If you mean that you cannot have other systems on that bank, you are probably right if you only want to listen to just TG's from a single system. If you mean that you can't have any other frequencies (conventional) programmed in, that is wrong.

An example might better serve here. On my Pro-96 I monitor the State of SD VHF TRS. I have most of the eastern part of SD control and alternate control channels in Bank 3. In the 5 Talkgroup scan banks for frequency bank 3 I have lots of TG's identified but only have scan bank 0 active. Banks 1-4 are marked as not active. In scan bank 0, I have most of the "close by" TG's that I am interested in and some statewide that if they are active I would be intersted in, in banks 1-4 I have other's that I am somewhat interested in and almost an entire bank of TG's which contain things I don't want to hear and are locked out. Based on this, when I operate my radio in "CLOSED" mode, I only hear the TG's in scan bank 0, when I operate in "OPEN" mode I hear everything except those which I have locked out and since I have Alpha-Tagged most of the ones I can hear (from where I am) when I see a number with no tag, I know it is something new and can note it.

lou: i have heard there are some really interesting things about the nashville/davidson system when trying to monitor it.... like a couple of complete sets of control freqs, two sites, etc....

oprystyle: you might call your favorite television station and see if they know how to monitor it and if they will help you program your scanner so you can hear it.... another set of ears listening is usually welcome in most newsrooms....

Well I fail to see how that is a problem. Except for simulcast systems, that is the normal way Motorola multi-site systems are set up. I mean, SD has 47 sites, 47 sets of frequencies...Okay that is state wide, lets consider STARNet in the Houston Metro area, it has 20 sites (and growing) all with different CC's & Alt CC's. My setup for it is exactly the same as I described above. :?:

From a scanner (Pro-96 that is) standpoint, it makes no difference if one site carries certain traffic that the other does not, since it makes no difference what CC is providing the TG channel grant, as long as you have the TG programmed (in closed mode) it will pick it up. Granted, for an actual radio on the system, there may be other considerations, but we don't have to worry about that. 8)
