Please correct me if I am in error, but I believe most "interference" is nuisance interference, like a co-channel user occupying "your channel" when you want to use it. The problem with digital, unlike with analog FM, you may not be able to recognize which user it is and know if you can talk over them, because they are in another city, far away. A full quieting signal is deceiving, as it offers no indication of relative signal strength.
Consider this, if the radio manufacturers had an option which allowed a service shop to program distant user IDs, then your radio would know you can talk-over the distant user without harm or confusion.
However, the real problem is the actual interference contour is typically twice the radius of the service contour and 5 times the area in square miles. This is because we run more power than necessary on the repeater output and it is not concentrated in the service area.
