Coast Guard VHF: FM Or NFM

Hello,

All the Coast Guard vhf channels, like the emerg ch 16, are these NFM or FM ?

Any changes contemplated in the "near future" ?

Narrow band channels have already been assigned. 12.5KHz spacing:
MARITIME VHF NARROWBAND CHANNELS - 12.5 KHZ
This is a US Coast Guard page, my quick look at the FCC page for Part 80 didn't show this. I don't know of any radios available on the retail market that are out that will do this. Of course any part 80 approved commercial LMR radio (Kenwood makes a few Part 90 radios that also have Part 80 certs.) will do these narrow channels.

If you scroll down to the bottom of that page, there are examples of 6.25KHz spaced channels. Analog FM doesn't work in 6.25 channels, so when that happens, it'll be some version of digital. I wouldn't count on it happening any time soon. There are not any standards for digital on Marine VHF at this time, and the page states that it's not allowed by WRC or the FCC yet.

Don't give them any ideas. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before some legislation is purchased. If Motorola made marine radios, you can bet it would be a looming mandate deadline all marine vhf to go 6.25 by suchnsuch a date. The government would probably hand out vouchers to help defray the cost too.

The VHF marine channels are wideband, which is "FM" settings in scanners.

I'm sure if you asked a Motorola salesperson, they would have a great sales pitch about why you needed to buy a MotoTrbo or P25 marine radio....

They also made a base model 3 channel (I think) it was at all NJ Marine Police stations.

Yep, they made a mobile/permanent mount also, I -think- it was based off the GM300 radio, but I could be wrong. I believe it used the Triton model name also. Triton M100, just looked it up.
Motorola didn't stay in the marine radio market very long. I guess they didn't get the market share they were looking for.

Motorola also sold a 2 Meter version or the Triton, it had a gray case the Triton had a white case, I may be wrong but I think it was called Metrum, memory gets foggy after 40 years.
