Homepatrol2, Workman T601 discone on 20 ft mast, now what type coax? Run will be less than 50 ft.

Antenna has a SO239 connection, Hp2 has SMA connection.

Re; coax

I strongly suggest Rg6 Quad shield, since its very low loss, smaller diamter makes it easier to route and best of all its not expensive. 73, n9zas

What band(s) are you interested in listening to? The lowest loss coax will give the best performance regardless of band but there are some bands that will preclude certain types of coax..

With the antenna having a SO239 connector and the Hp2 being SMA, could the Rg6 have connectors installed to work with this?

Use f connecrors and an f to pl 259 adapter... You can put a pl259 on rg6 with a reducer made for rg 58 but you have to be careful about it....

. The proper way would be use a Rg6/ F59 connector with a pl259 adapter at the antenna, and f59 male/ female/Sma adapter for your scanner. Be sure to use coaxial sealant at the antenna also. 73, n9zas

Thanks for the suggestions, and sharing your knowledge. I'm trying to get this right the first time...

Do NOT use RG-58, RG-59, RG-8X or RG-8 they have very high loss at 800 MHz. As for using a PL259 connector on RG-6, there is an adapter that is sized to fit RG-6. There are several screw-in adapters for use with different diameter coax cables. I don't remember the numbers but google it.

You can also google coax loss numbers. You should find a chart listing different coax numbers and their losses at different frequencies. Choose the coax you can afford that has the least loss.

The "proper" way to do it is use a good 50ohm feed line like LMR400 with PL-259 at the antenna end and an N male at the other end, then a short pigtail of thinner coax to the scanner with a female N to male SMA.

I use f to pl259 and f to n adapters to run rg6 to antennas... I did a test of a 30' setup using the above vs lmr 400 with a pl259 and another with an n conn. At the end and i couldnt see ant difference between the 3 using some 800 control channels....

On my current setup, i'm running just the small gray coax that would run to a mobile cb antenna..

You didn't see a difference because the thing you used to measure the difference cannot tell you anything but large changes. There is a noticeable difference between the cables but if your happy with RG6 and it receives everything you want then all is good.
