A digital Motorola TRS is still a Type II, only using digital modulation. As of now I have heard not a single rumor saying that Cobb is going digital yet.. but you might also want to check out www.cobbscanner.com for more info.

I heard something a long time ago that they were going digital. That was only once and a long time ago.

Because digital IS the wave of the future.. all radio systems are supposed to be digital capable by 2012 according to the hopes and dreams of APCO and the FCC.

Cobb County IS in the process of doing an upgrade to a digital system. VERY slowly, there are XTS radio's being issued out. They will be adding a 4th tower (behind station 14 Sandy Plains/Shallowford) to help with the CRAPPY reception in Precinct 4's territory. It's probably a good year off, so no need to go out and buy that digital radio, yet!

"Eventually all Motorola analog trunking systems will be forced to upgrade to Type 2 P-25 systems, in order to continue tech support from Motorola". This is what we were told here in Chattanooga, Tennessee, by a Moto tech. Motorola is trying to do away with all analog Smartnet public safety systems, and upgrade to a P25 mixed mode or completely digitized system. I realize that each jurisdiction have a plan for the deadline being set on public safety trunking systems. But money will definitely play a role as to when these systems will upgrade. A couple of things to remember. In order to continue recieving tech support from Motorola, public safety systems will have to upgrade and with APCO playing a role in interoperability, many public safety entities will have to comply with the standards set forth for Homeland Security.

The truth is that there is no need to upgrade all these systems to digital. Why would a county need to buy 50 million dollars worth of new equiptment just to have a digital system? The old type II systems work just fine, as long as they are maintained they will never need to upgrade. This is just motorola pushing their newest line like they have always done, to make more money. Anyone who disagrees doesnt know what they are talking about.

Well, money talks, BS walks! As someone who, many, many years ago, was in the position to purchase items, when some vendor "supplies" you with goodies, you tend to show favoritism to that vendor. Now, I would never, ever say that Motherola would wine & dine various public saftey agencies, but . . . . . .

I really do find it strange that a certain director of the 911 communications of a specific county here has a sister that has a job at a local Motorola authorized dealership!

I don't disagree with nothing you've said. I too believe Moto is using strong arm tactics with the elimination of Smartnet, to Smartzone systems. This overbearing attitude that Moto presents is part of the reason why many states and cities are choosing alternative companies, like EF Johnson and M/A Comm. And who suffers when such systems are in place are the public. Because you take away from the interoperability that Homeland Security and the APCO standards are trying to set forth.
I too, believe in the term, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". But if I'm being told that if I don't upgrade to some standardized equipment, I'll lose my tech support on sustaining my present equipment, I'll be flustered. But that's when you'll have to make some major decisions and weigh your options. This is part reason why M/A Comm is becoming a popular choice of comunication. For you and I, M/A Comm spells trouble to the scanner world. My $.02
