• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Does anyone know if you can still peak and tune the cobra 25 and 29 models? I dont work on them but am thinking of getting one. I hear some of the newer radios dont have the screws to adjust. Just wondering if the newer Cobra 25 and 29 models are still peak and tune worthy. Thanks.

No CB radio is "worth" peaking... To go from 4 to 5 watts doesn't do anything for your ability to get out, and could shorten the life of the radio. As for tuning... what do you mean tune? is there a problem? You wouldn't take a brand new car off the showroom and take it and say "I want a tune up"... If it's not aligned, I'd get another.

Was just kinda hoping to get 4 watts at least out of it, since the Uniden I had only was pumping two. Didnt mean to "step on toes". Wow.

I guess so. Guess I did say "peaked and tuned" but just wondering if they can be adjusted. I heard some of the new Presidents arent adjust worthy, so I was wondering about the almighty Cobra everyone seems to be in love with.

The new presidents can be adjusted. I adjusted my McKinley to what Presidents specs are. They are tuned low as to be FCC compliant.

You can have the 25 or 29 checked and adjusted to factory specs... I have had good luck with Bell's CB in Florida..

What you need to understand, and what I believe Dave was trying to explain, is that going from 4 watts to a couple more isn't going to do anything. Even using your 2 watt radio, going from 2 to 4 isn't going to do anything. You're literally talking about 1/2 S-Unit on the receive end.

You basically need 4 times the power (6 dB) for 1 S-Unit on the receive end. So in a 4 watt CB, you would need to go to 16w to add just 1 S-Unit on the receive end. Peaking and tuning is not going to take a 4w radio and make it put out 16w. So is it worth it? Only you can make that decision. By and large, it's a waste of money, aside from perhaps boosting the audio.

If you're looking for more power, just get an amp or a radio that puts out more power, and save the money on a peak and tune.

I've seen Cobras easily to to 8-10W on a good tune...(of course with a modest heat-sink added)

check out Walcott Radio | About Us. On one of their web pages they said something about a Cobra 29 & 40 watts...they also do a peak & tune option on CBs they sell...
