Hey! I don't know if any other law enforcement agency does this, but here, in the great city of Beaumont, the Beaumont Police Department places a code on a Patrol talkgroups when the talkgroups is needed as, I guess, a tactical talkgroup. For example, you would here an alert tone then "Code on Patrol 3. 7705 E. Van Huen." This will force other officers to communicate with Dispatch on the other two talkgroups (Patrols 1 & 2). I also noticed that the Jefferson County Sherriff's Office uses the same technique.

My question is: Does anyone know of a law enforcement agency that uses the same technique?

Here they use a code 10-03 on the channel that needs to be clear

They do something like that in the Houston Metro area on just about all LE dispatch channels, no matter the agency. They will hold the channel for current situation or emergency traffic only. However, if this continues for any length of time, all such situation traffic will be moved to a Tac channel, usually at the request of a supervisor, that will be monitored by dispatch.

As others are indicating, it's pretty common.

Hays County SO will hold traffic on a talkgroup when an officer cannot be contacted or when they're clearing a building (alarm or open door calls). Dispatch will come up and say "Hays County to the attention of all units, hold traffic until ##unit## is code 3." Then every few seconds a small chirp will remind users the talkgroup is still being held for emergency traffic only. All other officers, if needing to run a DL or license plate will move to the second dispatch talkgroup.

San Marcos and New Braunfels PD will do something similar without an annoying chirp every 5 seconds reminding you the talkgroup is held.

Here when an officer communicates on a talkgroup that is coded, the dispatch will simply say, for example, "Code on 1", if Patrol 1 is coded.

Same here in Beaumont. I remember when several officers had to work a wreck and several minutes later, Dispatch advised them to take their traffic to Patrol 4, which is an analog, talk talkgroup. I don't think we even use any TAC talkgroups here...

Oddly enough, although I can't guarantee this is universal, generally those two things are not the same; what we try and follow here on the site (in the DB):
TAC = Talk Around Channel
Tac = Tactical
That is if we can convince the DB Admin doing it to stop using all CAPs in the entries. :wink:
