To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I had no luck on the codeplug supersite and I searched here and could not find one. I need a Motorola codeplug for a T04KLH9SW3AN. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Usually, you have to build your own as not every feature is going to match 100%...I know it might be a pain but it is easier that way to make sure you don't miss something.

Flash code is 580008-000480-2. I have ILLEGAL in the display and can not read the radio so I can not make a new codeplug. My understanding is that if I can get a codeplug of an identical model number I can open the CPS using the codeplug and then CLONE using that feature. I did that on several medium power astro spectra radios. I think this usually happens when you are trying to remove information from a code plug. That is when I always had this happen. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hit the channel up button and ILLEGAL should go away. Sometimes they initially power up on an illegal mode after programming. As for reading it, are you using a 32 bit computer with ASTRO Mobile CPS? Also the DB25 cable from the RIB to the DB25 connector to the left, not the one under the handle.

Sorry I didn't give a good explanation of my issue. I bought a used radio. When I tried to read it using the computer and Astro Spectra Version R05.03.00 this is what happens. First when I power on the radio the HHCH shows SPECTRA +, then ERROR 8/10, then BLANK, then ILLEGAL KEY, then BLANK. The second line of the display shows: ZONE MUTE KEY.
When I try to read the radio I click on FILE, READ DEVICE, choose the proper comm port and click START the radio will emit a chirp like Astros do. The display shows SERVICE . About 10 seconds later the CPS shows COMMUNICATIONS WITH RADIO FAILED. I still have SERVICE showing in the HHDS display. When I click on OK the radio goes through the restart process and shows what I have described above. The data light on my off shore RIB does not show much activity on this radio but on other Astros it flashes constantly. I am using a 32 bit computer with Win XP. Have read and programmed dozens of Astros with my setup. I tried an off shore RIB and a Motorola SMARTRIB and have the same issue. I also tried my extra programming computer again 32 but Win XP. Either of these RIB boxes work with other Astros I have programmed.

The radio will not power up if I have the control cable plugged into the connector under the handle. It only powers up when the control cable is in the left connector under the power connector. So I have to attempt programming with the RIB connected to the plug under the handle.

The ID tag on the side of the radio says ASTRO PLUS.

I maintain several old Spectra radios that require DOS and the old software and using my DOS computer and the same RIB and cable I use with my new radio it reads and writes to the old radios perfectly.

My thinking was probably wrong. I have tried removing conventional personalities, zones etc from other Astro Spectra radios and sometimes get into a situation where the radio will say ILLEGAL after restarting. Under those conditions I can use the CLONE feature and load the old codeplug back into the radio and ILLEGAL disappears. My new radio says ILLEGAL KEY - not ILLEGAL so perhaps that is not the same situation. If I ever get to read the radio. That is why I was asking for a similar codeplug. If I can read this radio I can do all the necessary programming.

The radio will be used in amateur radio service so I do not need trunking, encryption and some other functions that may be in the present programming. Error code 8/10 is for the siren connection according to my error code. If I get into the radio I can turn this off also.

The ID tag on the side of the radio says ASTRO PLUS.

Ok, so what you have is not an ASTRO Spectra, its an ASTRO Spectra PLUS. This radio requires ASTRO25 Mobile CPS (not ASTRO Mobile) and a unique cable that plugs into the keyloading port above the control head cable port. It does not use a rib nor the DB25 cable.

EDIT: The astro spectra Plus programming cable you need is HKN61554352192.jpg

Thanks for the information. Now I need to find one of those cables. There is one on E-BAY for about $175 but I can't afford that to program one amateur radio.

Those cables are crazy expensive and not that common. The AS plus was an interim radio before the XTL came out that wasn't that common.

Any luck programming it in the last year? I thought I bought an Astro Spectra remote mount a few days ago but it turns out it is a Plus model with your exact model number... this is after I already made a 97 conventional channel codeplug assuming it was a normal W3 Astro Spectra...
