Does anyone have a state code list for PD communication? Some of them are obvious to understand but a few I can't figure out. Like 10-56. "Caller advised he heard a 10-56 in the apartment building." I assume 'gunshot'? But could be an argument or fight or something. Just curious if anyone has an updated list for Arkansas, specifically Cabot. Lists on the internet are no help. Thanks for any information.

Problem is a lot of departments use some of their own codes. As you said, some are common with everyone (like 10-4) but others can vary. For example, a code the local sheriff dept uses means one thing for them but something different for the state police when they’re on their radios.

Like 03msc said, they're generally different. And 10-4? Some actually use 10-5. Columbus (GA) PD uses 4 digit codes (e.g. 8110-auto crash with injuries; 7200-rape). You're probably gonna have to get your info from someone in the PD or perhaps a long-time listener to the Cabot PD.

Some use the standard APCO 10 Codes. None should be using any though if they really wish to be interoperable and be in compliance with Homeland Security and FEMA. Almost all fire has moved to clear talk, and MANY LEA's nationwide have. 10 codes are pointless now and just proving how stupid the fish in the pond games are.

Yeah, the clear talk thing lasted a couple of months and then pretty much went away. I guess each community has the attitude of "it won't happen here" so we'll just stick with our old ways. Back when I had a real job, I taught the NICS doctrine and everyone jumped on the bandwagon. At the bandwagon's first pit stop, most jumped off. NICS is really a workable procedure. It's flexible and practical, not that it matters.

ASP local troop uses 10-codes for everything. Everything. It’s interesting as I’ve heard this about plain speak but have heard no evidence of it actually happening.

In the area, I think only LSP has full compliance to plain speak use. Not sure if MHP switched from the 10, and 11 codes they were using yet or not.

I got to thinking. There are scores of agencies using plain talk and have for years. How many agencies with 4 or 5 officers, probably on VHF and probably with some sort of thick accent, are using plain talk? An example: "Harvey, go back out to Fred's place. He thumping on his wife again." Or, "Billy Joe's milk cow is loose again. Remind him one more time that this ain't free range country."

And you know what? It works just fine.

For the record, I wasn’t saying they shouldn’t use plain speak, just that I’m not hearing it myself. Other then the local city fire dept, I guess they mostly use plain speak.

Also, some agencies will use overlapping codes for the same thing. In Pope County, a "signal 64" means a 'dead person', but at times they'll say a person is "10-7" for the same thing. Usually 10-7 means an officer is 'out of service' but I've heard it used for a dead person too. "County, this subject is going to be 10-7, you can send the coroner."

Years ago, Miami detectives on a crime scene would use DRT and FTD: "Dead Right There" and "Fixin' To Die." This came from two detectives who tracked a murder suspect to our jurisdiction back about 1976.
