Colchester scrap yard fire. Big one!

This is a big one guys! I'm having a hard time picking up comms from it. Colchester is hard to hit this time of year, but everyone in the area is responding.

have not checked these, as I am trying to wrap up a project at work, so I cant comment on if they work or not. scanct.com is usually good. I got you as close as I can, Colchester is close to tolland county and no-dobut some of their units are responding.


colchester is on 453.58750, 452.18750,
montville, east lyme, norwich, hebron, glastonbury, willimantic, are probably the closest towns with their own FDs. Maybe Salem.


I am getting colchester FD, but it is mainly modulated static from having to get over that stupid mountain in the way. I brought two stock rubber duckie antanaes today, and the Diamond is at home. Wouldnt matter I think as terrain is the limiting factor.


I am going to be driving right by this later on today as I am going to the shore for the evening, so We will see how it pans out. May want to find a different route.

The only comms I have heard were from Troop K at the command center.

CT people, anything on the Lifestar freqs? I imagine they used the one at Backus, but the burn unit in hartford is where you think they would go to.

Sorry to chime in so late.

KX was running the operations portion of the call on 33.82. I do not now of a cross band on 33.82.Water supply was on 33.78. They also had some talk on 33.90 in the beginning of the call. KX also contact Wethersfield on intercity for their rehab and foam truck.

I heard the intitial dispatch. Full assignments from Salemn, appartus from Montville, Hebron, Lebanon. Then Foam trailers from Willington, and Norwich. Tankers from Columbia, Andover, and Bolton.

I also heard the Windhams getting sent out.

I heard car 21 ask for station coverage out of Lyme.

I also heard later on Wethersfield and West Hartford foam trailers.

Also I believe Mashantucket fast team was on scene.

Two medics from Windham hospital were also on scene.

I could see the smoke from East Hartford. Pretty impressive.

LifeStar Hartford

I'm pretty sure both LifeStar's run on the same frequency - 155.38500 MHz. I didn't pick up anything about the big scrap yard fire, but I will have 100% Bristol fire coverage when need be.


Any news on the burned victims?

Just remember that the 33.78 cross band listed is located in Coventry at the tower behind the town hall. It is only a 2 watt repeater and may not be heard very far away. I am not sure where the 33.82 repeater is located maybe right at KX.

Also the fire ground frequency 458.4125 PL 179.9 is also know as Fire Ground Red in KX, TN and WW. QV when they recieved their grant several years ago renamed it to UHF Channel 6.

I missed out on the VHF freqs there. Damn. For some reason I have them lumped into my "Tolland County" bank on my scanner, which is bank 6. I have Colchester lumped into my "shoreline east" freq bank which is bank 5. I use this to monitor Old Lyme/Saybrook, over to Groton/Mystic, and up to the casinos and over to colchester. This was the bank I activated and ignored the Tolland County bank in all the excitement. So, I guess I missed an opportunity.

I did drive by the site on my way to the shore early friday evening and you couldnt even tell that the fire happend except for the newsvans in the driveway and a pumper hanging out nearby and some state vehicles. No smell, no smoke, nuthin! I guess those foam trucks did a damn good job. Glad it was not worse!

Oh and no lifestar, it turned out to be Chopper8 from the news. Thats Hartford Courant reporting for ya!:lol:

I am not sure where the 33.82 repeater is located maybe right at KX.

I believe that the repeater for 33.82 )453.5375-PL 151.4) is located on Bulkely Hill which is off of Route 16 in Colchester.

The 33.82 link is at Buckley Hill. KX never changed the names to the fireground channels. They are still RED and BLUE just as they have been known forever.

The 33.78 link is at Coventry and you should know its a good receive site. People asked for freqencies to monitor and this was one of them. They certainly wouldnt hear anything on 78 alone unless they were close (except for KX). Just because its 2w doesnt mean all that much. Transmit power, elevation, antenna gain, etc all play a significant role in coverage. I can hear the 78 link just about everywhere in the area.

Glad to hear you can recieve 33.78 so well. I was not trying to discourage anyone from attmeting to listen to the site just inform them of where it was and how it was configured.

In my previos post I meant to say QV changed the name of Fire Ground red and blue. TN, KX and WW still use Fire Ground Red or Fire Red for the low power channels. Sorry for any confusion.
