I was stabbed in the back by a slow refresh! I had a higher bid but by the time I refreshed back to the web page the bidding was over and the other guy won - one of the problems of living out in the sticks! Oh well, I never did like tantalum capacitors and I see from some of the PC board pictures there's quite a few of them - I'll console myself with that!

My first decen't SWL receiver back late 60s was a Hammerlund HQ180.
Getting into DOD surplus, that later replaced with the Collins R-390, Had to refurb, re-tube and allign and used several years. A close competitor for your 851s. My uncle had one he wouldn't part with.
A more recent DOD auction, I came up with a truckload of WJ stuff and a couple BIG transmitters.
What I salvaged was a WJ-8711A and a rack of what I call 'twins' (half racks) one, another HF and a VHF/UHF
These get my vote as the finest with few competitors. I checked recent prices and they are now in price orbit.
Got the $$$, get the 8711 or civi equal WJ-1000. When I saw the price for the preselector, I built my own.
These will now set you back from 1k to 2K $ each, working.
