• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This may be a longshot. Some years back, I ran across a website where someone described modding an old Columbia MURS2 HT by removing the fixed antenna and attaching a connector instead (I don't recall if it was BNC or SMA). Obviously this allowed more efficient antennas to be attached, which improved the performance.

I cannot for the life of me find this page anymore. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

I have found a ton of pics, but all of them are with the antenna attached.

Take a picture looking at the antenna connector (sans antenna) and post it here.

Judging by the pics I found, it is absolutely 100% NOT a BNC connector. Likely SMA, but there is SMA Male and SMA Female depending on how it's set up.

Sorry I guess I wasn't clear. The antenna on the unit is attached permanently, it's a part of the case itself. Someone posted instructions on how he cut the attached antenna off and replaced it with a BNC or SMA connector that let him use other commercially available antennas instead (for better performance).

That information was on the old MURS-OPEN@yahoogroups.com. The author was August Hoecker, W8MIA. I couldn't find it either. It was a BNC connector that was fitted into the area where the antenna goes into the radio body. You might want to email him to see if he has the original information.

Hiding in a coffee shop.
It should be easy enough to do. Remove the antenna and wire in a coaxial connector.

Splitting hairs, here, but technically that's a modification to the radio and would void the type certification that makes it legal to use on MURS.
No, the FCC isn't going to come roaring up to your house and bust you...
