Yeah a saw that this morning. By looking at the radios it showed on TV, it looks like they are getting new Motorola Spectras, along with a new simulcast tower being put up in NE columbus as we speak.

Wish in one hand and poop in the other see which one gets filled quicker, a new radio system is at least three years away. At best, there is no money for it.

naaaaaaaaaaaa it will be a government grant at some point the Feds will put in half the $ and the city will put in the other half, and ding there is your funding. But since "Mayor Coleman" does have a pot to "pi$$" in and a window to through it out of (you remember his house keeps conviently burning down) it is still several years down the road. And will be several million over budget. :roll: :roll:

They're not buying a new radio system, just more new radios. This is a result of the shooting of CPD Officer Bryan Hurst last month during a bank robbery; Hurst was working special duty and did not have a portable radio with him and thus was unable to call for assistance.
The incident almost immediately led to calls for enough radios to be purchased to issue one to every CPD officer.
This city hasn't got the money to buy an entirely new radio system right now, especially what with the possibility of public safety personnel cutbacks looming.

Digital capable radios are not cheap. They cost usually around $2500 & up

It's called the allmighty Motorolla!!! :evil: Everyone knows the prices are jacked up, but when you're just about the only game in town, you get your price.

Moto is not the only game in town though. Prices are the way they are for anything in the public safety world. Anytime you ask for superheavyduty this or redundantly reliable that, the companies see $$$. And for this law suit happy age, anything they sell to public safety comes with an inherently high liability, so remember there are two sides to every story. Look at FDNY for example, They try to upgrade the radio system for a 15000 street member force, that takes time. And they get sued over it. then they get sued for not upgrading it. Regardless of manufacture, isn't $3000 worth a life of a worker?

Everyone obiviously has their own personal opinion, but I will caution you to say that there is only one reliable radio on the market. Feature for feature, and repair record to repair record, there are certain models of any brand that are head and shoulders above moto. The bottom line is fiscal responsibility while meeting the goals you set out to meet. I can tell you that after a pretty intense field trial, the moto was not the most user friendly to the end user nor were they the most durable (comparing 800 trunked models (XTS5000, XTS3000, EFJ 5300, Jag 700P, P7100)) Closed minds often find themselves in diffucult situations, espically in the public sector. I do agree that cheapest is not always best, but I am very hesitant to discourage open compition. Which is one of the biggest drivers behind the P25 suite of standards.
