TPD Arrests a guy tonight, ask for cage car to transport to Jail. He didn't want to go! starts kicking out the windows of the car and goes for the back one when the officer pulls over on 75 @ 3800 block south. Running code trying to get to Jail but didn't make it, Waiting for the van now.

Why doesn't TPD have cages in all their cars? I though that would be a must-have.

Where I come from in Southwest FL all of the cars have cages (we called them screens) and this was at small departments and 800+ deputy departments as well.

I remember when I came to Oklahoma for the first time about 11 years ago. I started at the police department in the town where I lived and everyone transported prisoners in the front seat. I was shocked. That would have gotten a guy written up pretty fast where I came from. Kind of like cuffing prisoners in the front...it's just something you don't do unless there is a VERY good reason to do it. Fast forward 11 years and guess what...that same department STILL transports prisoners in the front seat.

Sure, they've lost some equipment and had stuff damaged but I guess not enough to justify the cost of cages. It's all about the dollars, not about officer safety.

It's dangerous for everyone; the officer, other motorists, and even the prisoner. I was reading an incident report last night where an officer had to stop 5 times while transporting an intoxicated 10-15 (prisoner) 20 miles to the jail b/c the guy kept going besirk in the front seat...who knows?

The answer is simple, or Simpson rather. 5 point Nascar harness assembly, Hans device as needed.

I personaly love cages. I wish we had portand bars too. A lot of officers don t like cages cause it costs them leg room and they complain of back problems. Personally I think all cars shoud have them. TPD's new cages only have room for one prisoner. I like the idea in that it gives the officer the other 1/2 of the seat to store equipment. It also means the prisoner can not lay down to kick the window.
