I live in Worcester Ma and have a BCD996T. I no longer can receive Worcester’s transmissions but can receive the surrounding towns. I’m told Worcester is now on the CoMIRS system and I’d need to update to a SDS100 or SDS200.
My question: Is it worthwhile to for me to invest the money for one of these scanners as I’m told eventually everything will become encrypted.
Im not sure if and when this will happen in the Worcester area. Can anyone provide some feedback? Thank you.

For a little less money than the SDS100 OR SDS200 you can purchase the BCD536HP and receive Worcester frequencies.
You can get a good buy for about $400 used on eBay or here i buy them all the time

Thanks for the feedback.I’ll look into the BCD536HP. I’m kinda a novice at this stuff. Do you know if the 996T can be programmed to work on the CoMIRS system? I’ve had it a while it’s in excellent condition-It would be great if it could.

Bummer! Thanks for trying. I’ll check out the pre-owned BCD536HP and see what’s out there and weigh my options.Who knows maybe I can get some type of swap/trade in for my 996T. Thanks again for the feedback and your time, I appreciate it.

look for the 996p2 ... its the phase 2 verrsion of the 996T which is what you need for Worcester on the Commonwealth Of Massachusetts Interoperable Radio System (CoMIRS). I have several 996p2's and i love them. Programming is simple. ( i use ProScan and can send you an already built script if you wanted)

Thanks for your reply. I will look into the 996p2 also. I’m a novice at this trying to self educate. Not sure about a ProScan-I assume it’s a program for the scanner?

Thank you, I appreciate the offer. I’ll do some research and see what would be a good option for me. Just looking for something not too fancy. I loved my 996T Too bad it’s not programmable to the CoMIRS system. I’ll see what’s out there. thanks again.

Worcester is a simulcast system. As is the Zone 08 CoMIRS site you desire to receive.

You are much better off with a SDS than you are with a 996P2. The 996P2 is not a good simulcast scanner and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. There is some strange love affair some have with the 996P2 that makes people think it does great on simulcast systems.
Individual experiences are fringe at best, and likely as they receive only one site at a time.

I highly suggest you search the forums for "simulcast distortion" and you'll see the countless threads of folks who had issues with S.D. on their older scanners that went away with the SDS. I can tell you from first hand side by side testing, that the SDS operates 10x better on a simulcast system than the 436HP does. And the 436 is my favorite scanner! (I have three 536HPs on my main antennas)

Thank you for the feedback. There is a wealth of information out there. As I search the forums I find some of the info confusing, however in time I’m sure it will all come together; Especially from the replies I receive. I see the 536HPs are a favorite for some people as well as the SDS100 and SDS200 even though the SDS200 seems to be the most favored. Thanks again!

I find this to be one of the simplest and best explanations to the issue of simulcast distortion.

There is an article in the Wiki of this website that provides a far more in-depth explanation if one wishes to learn more: Simulcast Distortion - The RadioReference Wiki

As Mike states, the bottom line is, in most cases the only scanners that are going to work properly in most cases where simulcast systems are involved are the SDS models. There are also software and a few other non-standard solutions as well, but they are another rabbit hole for another time, and options that a majority of people won't want to consider.
