I was thinking about getting a used CR1A but there isn't any out there! Are they that good, that no one wants to part with theirs or was it, not many were produced?
I had one and found out later I was not impressed by it at all. My R75 did circles around it several times. Their QRP transciever is rather good though as it is low wattage output (hence QRP). A friend working there told me there was a limited quantity made and several were returned due to them being unable for updates. There was a glitch in the coding. He told me some got bricked because of it and had to be returned. Funny thing though- before I bought my R75 this unit was about $100 more.It caught a few people's eyes but not more.
I had the earlier CR1 and it was an ok receiver, very quiet and it worked well. You have to put a price to anything like this for ranking and in the $300 range its a good receiver. I sold mine for $375 when they were still in production and that may have been a fair price back then but in my opinion not now. I believe the CR1a and CTX-10 uses the same tuner chip as some mid grade SDR receivers like the SDRPlay RSP1.
I also choose the R75 over the CR-1a when looking 5-6 years ago. I felt my choice was really justified when CommRadio pretty much dropped the CR-1a and the way they appeared to do that to me when their TX unit was announced.
For that kind of money, you could get a decent SDR and antenna and have money left over. Even a decent used ham transceiver (most of them nowadays have built in general coverage receivers) will run that much.
I've embraced the new technology with 4 SDRs and the Kiwi, but twisting knobs is still very much alive with me. I think the two are very complementary.
