    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value.     The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi Guys.

We are looking at buying a new test set, but I need some advice from you guys. I've narrowed it down to the following 2 units

Freedom R8100

Freedom | R8100

Aeroflex 8800S

Aeroflex.com - 8800S Digital Radio Test Set

We mainly test analogue and NXDN radios/repeaters, so I'm not worried to much about DMR.

Have any of you guys had any experience with any of these 2 models. I really like the autotune which both models have. The freedom also has NXDN type C trunking feature which is also quite nice to have since we have a Kenwood typec trunking system.

I have a preference for Rhode and Schwarz and Agilent/HP test sets. Aeroflex has had some issues with some of their units. Their handheld 3500A had many problems. Not sure about the 8000 series though, never used those.

Since it is one of the most expensive test sets you will problably invest in, I would see if you can get a demo unit from a vendor and try it firsthand before buying one.

I've only used the Freedom R8000B (back when it was the General Dynamics R8000B) and I liked it a lot. I have no experience on the Aeroflex or R&S however, so nothing to compare the R8000B to.

Freedom R8100 is okay for NXDN. Worked with it including NEXEDGE radios, but hever had a chance to compate it with Aeroflex.

In any case, keep in mind that NEXEDGE is paid option.
