Communication Error on BC796D

I haven't used this setup for awhile on my BC796D running Bearcat digital software 1.0 can't connect to computer ,have communication error please check bc296d or bc796d remote setting' s.I haven't updated any fireware ,and this worked couple years ago.
Please forgive me. I am sure this has been discuss before .I just can't find my way around on this site yet.

This is very difficult to diagnose, frankly. If you're using a newer PC, you don't have a serial connection - so you would likely be using a USB-serial cable. Did you load the drivers and use Windows Device Manager to see if the COM port you think it allocated is really available?

There are things out there, like some Bluetooth products, that as I understand it like to grab a port and not let it go, even if it's not really connected.

In addition, I would be willing to bet that the software you're using is as old as the hills, and is likely unsupported. Best to pony up for something much more up to date, like ProScan
