Scanner: Uniden BCD396T
OS: Windows XP
Software: Uniden Avanced Scanner Director
USB to Serial cable: Tripp-Lite
Driver version: 1.3.0.0 off the Tripp-Lite CD

I got the Uniden Scanner Director software downloaded from uniden site. Got the Tripp-Lite USB to Serial adapter and its drivers installed.
When I try to communicate with the scanner, it generates this error message:

Communication Error! Please check scanner remote setting.

I tried:

Checking voltage of 2700 MaH NiMH cells, they are all at 1.29V and good.

Syncing baud rate on both the scanner and the software end. I tried almost all settings, including 9000, 38400 and others.

Syncing the COM Port on the scanner and the software. Currently using COM4. Tried COM3 and COM1. I get much farther in COM4 and COM1, it flashes Reading scanner model and then announces the dreaded Communications Error. With COM3, I am unable to get even that far, it just says - unable to connect to scanner.
Nothing else is using COM4, there is no conflict.

Turning off FIFO buffer in Settings/Control Panel/Devices/COM Ports

I troubleshot the COM4 port and Windows XP says that the device is working properly.

Any other things I can try? Different software? Newer drivers?

Please help!

What firewall/Internet security software are you running? Some of these applications interfere with serial port communication. Also, any Palm Pilot, Pocket PC stuff?

Did you put scanner in computer control mode?
Press Menu. Scroll to 'Settings' and press E/Yes.
Scroll to 'PC Control' and press E/Yes.
Scroll to Off, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600, or 115200 and press E/Yes.
Press Scan to exit.

No firewall. I am running Norton security that came with XP.

No other devices are used, aside from a USB mouse.

I've already tried every permutation of the above. Currently I am trying 19200 bps and that doesn't work either, same "Communicaton Error!".

One more thing to try. When everything is hooked up, and turned on, and the software is running, try turning the scanner off, and then back on.

Same thing.

First, flashing "Reading Scanner Model" and then the dreaded Communication Error! Please check scanner remote setting.

Try uninstalling norton completely. After that do all your connections for the radio. I have had millions of problems with Norton and as soon as I deleted from my computer most or all of my problems went away. After your radio is up and running try www.grisoft.com free version of AVG much better software. Just my 2 cents worth

I disabled Norton -- with no results.

I wonder if it has something to do with the drivers, if I am not installing them right.

It was the drivers. The Tripp-Lite drivers are old and don't work for XP, however downloading version 2.0 of their drivers for XP works nicely.
