In addition to Sinclair & Taco antenna, anyone know other companies that make the antennas for VHF voice communications for ATC towers and ARTCC sites. Just curious.

Thanks for all replies.

No, but one antenna not mentioned often is the Sirio antenna which I have used and it worked very well. I do not think a commercial antenna will necessarily work better.

Here is the Sirio antenna. The larger diameter upper element gives it better broader frequency coverage. It is meant to be mounted on the very top of a hollow pole (which would be fastened to another pole so the coax can exit the first pole). I doubt you will find a more rugged antenna or one with more gain.

I do have an FAA surplussed 100-400 MHz discone but do not know where others like it can be found and never saw the FAA use one.

This is probably the 100-400 MHz discone you mentioned above:

No. That is not really a discone (though often wrongly advertised as such) but a biconical. The FAA I have is a true discone with the disk configuration above a cone configuration. It has more rods than the 8 in each place than in the typical hobby design and is substantially more rugged with a substantially larger insulator between. I do not have a photo and currently it is apart in a box. I think they were made under an FAA contract from the paperwork that came with it.

That company in your link also sells circularly polarized antennas to the FAA and I have seen those on one mountain top FAA site (Buena Vista, VA). See attached.xIMG_2592.JPG

DB Products, KRECO, Antenna Specialists (now some other name), Antenna Products, Celwave, Astron, RAMI come to mind right away and there are dozens more. DPD Products is consumer product and not something you would see in use at an airport.

Are you looking to purchase one the commercial antennas, you are going to run Andrews LDF-50A for coax, right?

Amphenol jay beam are popular in europe. Similar product lines and similar mind blowing prices, however they're amazingly well built. I've still got a nearly 40 year old discone, and a 30 year old UHF vertical still going strong.
