My old computer finally ended up face down in the dirt (it died). This new one isn't state of the art but it is miles ahead of my old one. It is an AMD dual core and runs Windows 7, 64 bit. I have been using a null-modem RS-232 cable connected to the back of my 996T for programing. The new computer doesn't have com ports, just USB. I found a USB to RS-232 adapter sold by StarTech. The included driver DOES work with Win 7 64 bit although the info on Amazon only list XP and Vista 32/64. If you have the same problem I had, you might check out this adapter.

Jack can you provide a model number and/or site info for where you got that USB adapter? We can then add it to our wiki article that is documenting such things ... 73 (best regards) Mike

There is a wiki for converters? Didn't realize that.

If it is not there, the TRENDnet TU-S9 has been completely wonderful. Same chipset as the USB-1 and half or less than the price. I paid $15 for it when I got my BC346XT a month ago.

The unit I bought is a Startech model ICUSB232PRO. I got it through Amazon.com and it was around $30 with shipping.

A lot of those adapters I find all use the Prolific PL-2303 chip for converting the serial to USB. Pretty common chip.
