    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value.     The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

    This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

If anyone can clear this up for me, it would be great. When listening to Carroll Cty. Sherrif in NH, I infrequently get this low-tone buzzer sound (similar this http://www.kb9ukd.com/digital/motorola1.wav) right before the digital voice comes over. Now they are on the frequency 154.860, which is not in the typical 800-900 MHz range of Motorola Type 1 systems. Is this possible? Can they run a Motorola Type 1 system in that frequency, or am I just getting garbled digital noise before the APCO-25 scanner card kicks in on my BC-796D? I try doing some trunk searching in that lowere frequency range, but no ID's or anything else comes up on the screen. Gotta luv being a newb!

Moto VHF/UHF trunked systems are by definition Type II only, so that sound must be something else. Is this known to be trunked, or is it P25 conventional? That might explain the lack of IDs. What exactly is the "lower range"?

According to this website, http://www.kb9ukd.com/digital/, there is the "Motorola Type 1 (old) Trunking Control Channel", and the BC796D manual has a programming section for Type 1 systems (see pg. 47). This is what got me going in circles. I am aware of the fact that most systems are Type 2, and operate in the 800-900 MHz, range (opposite of the "lower range", 153-156 MHz). Up here in NH, public safety mostly, if not all, operates in this "lower range", which is why I first thought they didn't use trunked systems at all. But what also got me curious was, for example, in a typical dispatch-mobile conversation, I either get all dispatch, or all mobile, and rarely get a two-way or more conversation. The reception is genarally clear, especially since it is digital, and never broken, thus it's not a matter of bad reception. So I'm curious to know if maybe they are using an older trunking system, and if that's not the case, what in the world is that game-show buzzer sound preceding the transmission?

According to the RR Database, this isn't a trunked system. The buzz you are hearing is probably the scanner syncing up the digital signal to decode it.

Thanks, that's the answer I needed. If you're sure. I mean, how does RR determine that a frequency is trunked or not? Is it based on user input, or is it based on some kind of FCC query?
