I have a Uniden BC760D and have been unable to program it with my computer using the software provided or any sample software off the net. My computer doesn't seem to recognioze any new hardware. Can anyone help me configue my computer properly. I have tried to contact Uniden Customer Service but can never get home to call during there hours.

The first question to answer is does your computer have an actual serial (RS232) port or does it only have USB ports? If it only has USB ports, you must first get a USB -> Serial port converter cable/adapter and make sure it is functioning correctly.

After that, we can give you a hand.

Both computer and scanner have female connectors. I was only able to find a cable that had a male and female connection so I had to add an adapter that made the cable both male ends.

Okay, provided that you have not gotten hold of a cross over cable (null modem) or adapter, then it should work. I was a little confused by the comment, "My computer doesn't seem to recognioze any new hardware." When plugging in a RS232 device there is no connection made until some software tells it to look for a device. I mean it is not like USB where the computer tends to "see" new hardware. Tell the software to try the various COM ports available (your Operating System will provide that data) and one of them should work to connect the to the radio. Also, make sure that you tell the radio what speed you will be communicating (match that in the software), that is done through the menu on the radio. Mine is boxed up right now so I can't try it out, either look in the manual or just go for it looking through the menus.

Well... I thiught that was the way it was suppose to work but it doesn't. I have tried every setting and also tried to have the programing software look for the scanner. The manual is no help and the costomer service is always closed by the time I get home. It was the same with my old computer, Pentium II, but I thought it was just to old. I don't understand why the computer does not detect it. Should I try a new cable or USB cable?

Computer serial ports are never female. They are 9 pin male (or 25 pin male in very old computers). The analog video connector is the same size but is a 15 pin female. Perhaps you confuse the two.

It sounds like you need to use the USB to serial adapter in the absence of a 9 pin male connector on the computer. Depending on the operating system you may have to install a driver for the usb to serial cable. Look in Device Manager to see what COM port is assigned to the adapter once you are sure the drivers are installed.

Then set the software to that Com port and match the baud rate the radio is set to.

If your old computer has a seriel port it should work, but a device on a serial port is NOT dectected by PLUG AND PRAY, ie the scanner does not become a device on the system.
