• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

The land of broken calculators.
Been done before.
Flopped before.

Now an idea I could get on board with, not that anyone other than myself would buy one, is a cell phone with an external connector like the first phones had. I might even consider buying an iphone if it had one.

If you include the price of the phone, that has to be the most expensive FRS radio ever made. Apple should buy this company... just imagine a FRS radio with an Apple logo on it. Apple could charge $699 each for the iRadio and people would line up outside the night before the release date just to get one! :)

I'd also question the legality of it in the US. I'd be surprised if it got Part 95 approval. I even dare say it's a silly idea. If you need a FRS radio, go buy one for $20 and if you loose/break it then no big deal. Who would want to use an expensive smart phone as a two-way radio?

Half watt UHF with very limited frequency coverage and no license required. Sounds like an expensive FRS gadget.

Looks like they are operating on 467; in the portion of the band for GMRS repeater inputs and the splinter freqs allocated to FRS only. Scrambler? I believe that won't get FCC certification in this band. I recall reading (here?) that one or two blister pack radio makers got busted for putting simple voice inversion scramblers on their products. They plan to offer data capability? That won't fly on this band either.

This look like a fancy FRS radio velcro'd to an iPhone, and they want how much for it????? This was not thought out very well. I doubt even a prototype has been built yet.

With the way the FCC does type acceptance now, by allowing the company producing the radio to contract with an approved lab, just about anything seems to be able to sneak through. Wouldn't surprise me at all, anymore, if the FCC approved a VHF-FRS radio...
