Control Channel Only & Simplex Operations

Is it correct that if you program a scanner to be control channel only, you would not hear any simplex traffic on an 800 trunked system? (The National Fire Protection Association standard on fire department radios says radios must be simplex capable and I know simplex is used occasionally). (Granted you'd have to be fairly close to the location of the simplex transmission to hear it.)

So if your program all the frequencies for a trunked system just so you could catch the simplex transmission, what would happen if you did not uncheck the "control channel only" box?

If P-25 systems are control channel only, then how would you go about hearing a simplex conversation?

The simplex channels would not be part of the trunked system. They would probably be using the ITAC frequencies, which you would have to have programed in as conventional. If they have simplex freqs they would be programed into their radio's as seperate from the trunked system.

Just as seamusg stated, simplex channels are not entered as part of a trunked system, they are entered/programmed in just as you would a VHF or UHF frequency.

Remember that simplex is similar in range to FRS/GMRS, only one to a few miles. You'd have to be right in the neighborhood or general area to receive them.
