The software is freely downloadable:

http://geocities.com/jjintokyo/

and I imagine old palms are only a few dollars in the US. Serial cable modified to remove the need for the null-modem would add another couple of dollars.

(total cost in the UK for me to do this was about £15 - and electrical goods are more expensive here!)

After talking to the seller I found out the pda was a Palm Pilot M105 (21.00), an am now aware of the software. So for around 40 bucks I should be able to make this work.

M100 or M105 both work fine....40 bucks sounds more expensive than UK...must be wrong!

parts and labor my dear man........parts and labor.....

Well the second-hand M105 I recently bought on ebay was £7, cable £2, new D9 plug £0.64, postage added another £6. Ten mins to modify the cable (I didn't charge myself)...so if you can DIY then should be cheaper over there.

This looks like another option as well...... granted the original idea was to move away from a pc solution....

Cheap laptop is fine but powering them is a pain unless in a car due to the high cost of replacement batteries.
PCR1K and palm run fine from cheap batteries (I use a gel cell for the PCR when truly mobile).

If going the laptop route then I'd recommend Probe1K for controlling the radio

(yes I know Probe1K is expensive but Probe really is the best!)

If I don't charge myself then how will I get it to equal 40 dollars?

Well I suppose I could have charged myself £4.92 for my ten minutes (I wish I did get paid that!) and I'd have arrived roughly at your 40 dollars :)

I talked to a gent from UK today for about three hours on IRC about pocsag/flex decoding in london.....(that must be why the above link sparked my interest).

Nasty looking page...red text is not good and it's all so jumbled!

Pager data is pretty much national here so what he picks up in London I'll pick up here. Exceptions are fire alert pagers and lifeboat pagers whcih are mainly localised (but on nationally agreed freqs) and also some of the hospital pager systems.

(ought to move to tavern?)
