Will the PSR-500 convert a conventional VHF to Digital automatically or do I need to set the conventional Freq to P25 in order for it to decode??

As long as you don't set the conventional channel to CTCSS or DCS (which both force analog), the scanner will automatically detect and decode P25 voice.
