Hi all,

I have read the specs for the 996XT and others, but I am not sure I understand if these scanners are capable of displaying the radio ID numbers on conventional simplex and/or repeater channels.

The specs make it clear that the radio IDs can be read on trunk systems, but what about P25 simplex and conventional repeaters, and which of the Uniden scanners can do this?

The XTs will display unit IDs only if you fool the box. Program the conventional frequency as a P25 'single frequency trunking system'.

Thanks Flash,

Do you know of any of the other radios that have this feature, Uniden or otherwise?

All of the Unidens I've worked with from the T series (396T/996T) up thru the HomePatrol treat a P25 conventional channel as "one frequency trunk" if you want to see radio IDs and talkgroup IDs. GRE scanners do not - they will display that data if the channel is just programmed "normally".

The good news is you can program multiple frequencies into a "one frequency trunk" system, either as one site or multiple sites, so if you have a batch of frequencies that will all have the same talkgroup and RID info (say if an agency has a handful of conventional P25 channels), and you don't mind not knowing which frequency the info came from, you can do that.

How do You do that? Please

I'm literally on my way out the door to work, but if you post what scanner and what software you use to program it, I'll try to type up a step-by-step guide either during the day today or when I get home tonight.

Will do,
Pro-197 Win500

Thank You

The PRO197 is a GRE built scanner and thus doesn't have (or need) the "one frequency trunk" solution. You have the ability to see TG and radio IDs even on a conventional channel, as far as I know - I don't have a PRO-197, but I have the PSR-600, its GRE sibling, and that's the way it works.

The Kentucky State Police use P25, but I don't see Radio ID's,unless I set it up wrong.

I have the KSP set up as a regular system on my 396XT. The one frequency trunk is very annoying. If the KSP uses the same TGID on every channel, the alpha tag will always be the same. I only use one frequency trunk for things like the TSA and other small towns that use it repeated. Uniden should release an update that allows radio ids to be seen even on a P25 channel programmed in a conventional system.

Actually, the PSR-800 is the only GRE scanner that can display radio and talkgroup IDs on P25 conventional channels. The PRO-197/PSR-600 will only show them on trunked systems.

And yes, the whole "one-frequency-trunk" thing on Unidens is extremely annoying. In addition to scanningisfun's observation, I have noticed that it adds a few tenths of a second to the decode time, resulting in the first part of transmissions getting cut off. Overall its just a very clumsy way of doing something simple, and doesn't work well.

So does my Pro-18 on the KSP set up as p25 convential as does all the new Mayfield Ky P25 and all other convential P25 systems these were imported direct from the RR database.
