Conversion of 500 mhz handheld scanner to 800 mhz

Helllllppppp!! I have a box of the older handheld 500 mhz programmable scanners and was told with alittle tweeking they could be updated to 800 mhz??? Can this be done ?and how? It seems like a waste and a shame to have all of them and them not be good for nothing.
