To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Let me explain. You can easily buy the screen and keypad that go along with the 6000XE and get the case for it but the serial number and model number will no longer match the radio. Someone else can help me out here but I believe that whenever you program the radio it will still think it is a model 1 and might have some issues.
You can do what you want, but putting an XE badge on a non XE radio does not make that radio an XE. Furthermore, the value of the radio (that was once original that has now been hacked to death) will plummet.

I used to own a 6000 model 1 that was converted to a model 3. While the model # did change, the serial # did not. I have no idea how it was upgraded, but it worked perfectly, & was auto tuned on an Aeroflex 3920 before I bought it. It did increase the value over the original model 1, but cost substantially less than a true model 3. Because of this, I was able to afford it. But again, I have no details on the upgrade.

Well, the whole M1/M3 issue is a rather moot point, because I (finally) found a case. However, the main issue I have with the XE conversion is the top display. If I were to do a direct swap-out, would it work or would I have to do something with the codeplug?
As it sits, I think the radio is probably worth $200 tops. On eBay, sellers are asking for at least $1000 for an XE. For me, it is actually cheaper to build an XE than buy one. Besides, I was really attracted to the XE because of the larger top screen—and I like to tinker with stuff.

It's probably worth a little more than that. Since I posted that comment, I did a little research and found that the frames (with control tops) go for over $300. Taking that into consideration, I now suspect that it might worth somewhere north of $500.
Anyway, I'm still waiting for a yes-or-no answer to the control top conversion. I tried it on a developmental APX7000 M3 I got about a year or so ago, and I managed to get the top to turn the radio on and off but the screen was blank.
Wait a minute...
I just powered up the APX6000 and it gave me an “ERROR 09/01” message, but still could TX (I couldn’t test RX because it is 7/800 MHz). I was able to read the code plug and here are some shots of what came up on the CPS:
Judging by this, I don’t think this is a model 1 after all. How would you cram 1000 channels on a radio that only has three zones of 16 channels each?
In the model number, the "UCD" says it's a model 1. The serial number indicates it's a no tag radio. Be it ALT tested, or parts built. I can't make any sense of the HOST/DSP numbers.
