If Rockdale was SMART, they would have gotten into talks with DeKalb County and just changed their two sights to P25 and onto the DeKalb system. Could save a couple million dollars. Naaah, who am I kidding?

Oh, and Conyers (the only city in Rockdale)? They use 2 conventional analog 800 MHz channels for their Police Department and are NOT planning on joining Rockdale.

the issue I have is side stepping the RFP process. Sure, state law allows a municipality to pay state contract pricing, but this doesn't always mean the best deal. It is the equivalent to paying list or sticker price. No bargaining, no competition.

other vendors such as Harris, Cassidian/EADS and EF Johnson all have similar solutions available at a LOWER cost, but Rockdale did the good ol' boy Gawga way. Meanwhile, Rockdale, like other counties in the metro Atlanta area, are facing a sales tax increase to pay for this system, this all at a time when many families struggle to pay for gas (which will hit $4 a gallon if not higher). Georgia has one of the HIGHEST gas taxes.

No shopping around or competitive bidding took place, so no break on pricing was even discussed. Rockdale just pulled out the old mans' credit card (which happened to be your tax money) to finance it.

the real question is what the per year maintenance cost will be. It's no secret Motorola's one of the HIGHEST in the industry. So in other words, after you raise taxes to pay it off, how much will it continue to cost you with perpetual upgrades, HOST/DSP fixes (which Ma M charges you for, unlike other vendors who include it for free), depot repairs, etc.

Work with other agencies? HA HA HA...ROTFLMAO. I think the term "herding cats" comes to mind. Have fun with that.

Just business as usual in "the dirty south". Nothing to see here...move on.

Spotted this while waiting at a Pilot T/C in middle Georgia. Really neat set-up.

Here's a link to the contract they approved:

2nd year post-warranty is $144,000 for the 4-site system and it goes up annually from there. The Motorola account manager discusses it at 8:50 mark in the discussion video.

In the second video (public comments), at the 3:25 mark, a Harris rep informs the board that Harris was ready to submit a proposal for the 4-site system that would be less than Motorola's price. Naturally, this fell on deaf ears.

Mind boggling, isn't it?

Why not pay two full time junior engineers $70k a year per engineer and give them two sites each to babysit.

Counties like Rockdale deserve a taxpayer revolt.

Not surprising. I watched the video, and it didn't phase me when the Harris rep spoke, as Rockdale is a good old boy, backwoods redneck haven- and they already had their mind made up they were going to pay whatever Ma Ma threw at them. Nevermind the county is VERY POOR (no businesses, most tax revenue is from property taxes, Rockdale is basically a bedroom community for Atlanta. Of course with the disappearing middle class, foreclosures are at an alltime high, and property tax revenue is down low), let's raise sales tax through SPLOST to finance what essentially is already 10 year old technology to replace perfectly functional 10 year old technology.

Harris, Cassidian and EFJ never get a shake in metro Atlanta, thanks to the good old boy network. The further out you go, the less it stinks. Floyd county, for example, signed a contract with Harris for an P25 simulcast 700/800 system, boy did that turn some heads. But they saved a ton of money, and will get more advanced subscriber radio, including some Unity radios, and pay less than feeding the Motorola pig.
