Cop Cars Repossessed

To say times are tough economically in this country is an understatement. But the sheriff of Alexander County, Illinois has set a new standard for deprivation. Sheriff David Barkett had his official cruisers repossessed by the local bank in the county seat of Cairo.

They might have them back now. Story is from late September, 2009.

A Sheriffs Department in Florida donated some cars to them. It was a big local media event when they arrived on the back of an auto transport truck - this happend last year. Alexander Co. is probably the poorest county in Illinios and the county seat is Cairo - which itself is about ready to implode. There is only one major business in Cairo and that is the barge terminal (Cairo sits at the confluance of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers). However, this terminal will be closing in a couple of years as it is moving up-river to Metropolis, IL.
