For vhf/uhf scanner freqs; DIY homemade antenna using copper. Can I use a smaller diameter tubing, smaller than 1/2 inch? Thanks

You can use 1/2" down to a 12 gauge copper wire. The thicker the antenna material, the more wideband the antenna will be. The 12 gauge, by comparison, would be very narrowband. I would not suggest anything larger than 1/2".

The x-omni antenna uses huge tubing like 2-3 inches to achive broadband reception at UHF. I think it will give problems with strange impedance but that's no different from most other dipoles that are supposed to be broadbanded.
