I have been trying to find coax that is copper shielded so I can solder it to 300 Ohm twin lead antenna wire to experiment some with dual band antenna. I tried soldering regular coax, but it is not solderable. What type should I be looking for? Thanks for the help.--Gary

First, what size of coax do you need? There are lots of ordinary types
using copper braid: RG-58/U, RG-8X (type), RG-213/U, even miniature
RG-174/U (all 52 ohms); then there are the 73-ohm types. I presume
you are unable to solder to the foil shield of the coax; is that correct?

If the braided shield is copper tinned why cannot I get solder to stick to it so I can solder it to a copper wire? I tried scraping the braid to remove the tinning ,but it still was silver colored. Could the braid be aluminum?

It depends on teh cable, and yes it could be aluminum

You need a 4:1 balun if you connect 300 ohm twin lead to RG type coax. Get one at Wal*Mart in the TV dept. It really wont work right without it regardless of what antenna you build. Good Luck.
