Sheriff's Office Police Services Begins in Cornelius
June 30, 2014 -- Tomorrow at 12:01 a.m., the police services for the City of Cornelius will be officially provided by the Washington County Sheriff's Office working in partnership with the city council and mayor.

The Sheriff's Office looks forward to the opportunity to serve Cornelius and is honored to be chosen as the law enforcement provider for the city.
Lieutenant (Chief) Gene Moss, Sergeant Al Roque, and Corporal Mark Trost will be the leadership team at the city. They will be joined by 10 additional deputies to provide continuous law enforcement coverage. The previous Cornelius Officers will be Sheriff's Office Deputies beginning July 1, 2014.

The previous Cornelius Officers will receive a two month training and familiarization to the Sheriff's Office which will be completed by September. Preliminary planning is for the return of some previous Cornelius Officers to patrol the city after the Sheriff's Office September shift bid.

For July and August, Cornelius will be serviced by current Sheriff's Office Deputies. During the summer transition, some deputies will be in Sheriff's Office vehicles and uniforms while some will be in Cornelius vehicles and Sheriff's Office or Cornelius uniforms. Beginning September 1, 2014, all deputies serving the city will be in Cornelius vehicles and uniforms.

Fairview, with about 9,000 residents, could save $200,000 to $300,000 annually...Some Fairview leaders have been trying to make room in the budget so the city can hire at least one more officer, creating a large enough force to have an officer on duty at all times.

Either this article is wrong or something in Fairview isn't right. A city of 9000 and they can't maintain 24/7 coverage? Really? Florence, North Bend, and Sweet Home are all around 8000-9000 residents and all maintain 24/7 coverage, my hometown of Reedsport (4100 people) maintains it with a department of 9, and so does Coquille with 3100 residents and a department of only 6.

Yea its odd city of 9,000 cant keep 24/7 poilce coverage. My home town Florence as 8,000 give or take and they have 24\7 poilce coverage . They also or used to take call for service in dune city.

Politics and money. Larger agency <insert name> gets a bigger boundary and kingdom, and adds to their staffing & budget -- while the smaller agency or municipality <insert name> touts cost savings and access to more specialized resources. Unfortunately, I can't help but wonder if local needs, oversight, and knowledge gets lost in this process.

The reason Fairview does not have 24/7 coverage is because the surrounding agencies are willing to handle calls in the city if Fairview officers are not on duty.

If the other agencies stopped providing this help you would likely see 24/7 by Fairview.
