Hi,

I have a few questions for whoever listens to Columbus Police frequently:

When an officer calls radio and says: How does it look for a number?
The dispatcher says name it, then the officer says a street name or intersection. What does this mean?

And let me get this straight,
Code 1= Citation issued, report taken
Code 2= gave warning
Code 3= arrest made
Code 4=Nothing Found ?

Code 4 is an all around clear, nothing found no need for me here I'm outta here, nevermind I'm going back on a number.

10-56, or "Five-Six" also means "I'm stopping at Chipotle" just like "Number".

"286" means "I'm stopping at Citgo for some gas and maybe a cigarette". I have no idea where "286" comes from. Maybe somebody else can answer that.

281 is request for fuel not 286. I don't know why, we have always said that.

"Can I take my meal break, please?" The dispatcher authorizes meal breaks based on activity and number of cars currently available.

Number refers to 10-56. Code lists say "request for number" but it actually, officially means "meal break". They used to ask "clearance for a 56" but radio shorthand corrupted this to "clearance for a number" for whatever silly reason (probably thought they were hiding something or whatever) and the code itself has since gotten corrupted.

Your clearance code assumptions are mainly correct:

Code 1= Citation issued AND/OR report taken
Code 2= Warning issued
Code 3= Arrest made
Code 4= Clear miscellaneous

Code 4 is a catch-all for anything that doesn't fit the other three. There were at one time (I think) 6 or 8 of these clearance codes, but those above 4 got sliced off when CPD got their first status boxes in the cruisers (back in the 1970s); there were only 8 buttons, and 4 of them were already taken up by In Service, Enroute, On Scene, and Out of Service. With only 4 left, the clearance codes had to be cut back and changed around.

CPD 600 Cars are Freeway and I think starting at 650 or the motorcycles.

Some precients have run out of numbers like 18 and have units like 1806 and 1807.

300 series I have seen are community liasion.

500 is SWAT.

I thought the XX01 cars were unmarked cars. I listen to zone 2 and frequently here 1401 being used to do surveilence on different things.

All of the x9 regular patrol units are midwatch wagons (e.g. 49, 159...).

As for the other clear-codes, I used to know more of the others, but I do remember that Code 1-A is a 10-8A (burg alarm) report.

I believe 1401 is a plain clothes unit.

I have seen 1805 1806 and 1807 in marked cars with that number on the plate and sife of the car. I know over the summer they had the special task force and were using numbers in the 4000's

Yes, I too have seen the 1800 series cars. They are marked, and look like normal cruisers. And on the scanner, they respond to all runs just like a normal patrol car. It's quite odd.
