To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Just got myself a UHF XTS5000 and a programming cable off of ebay to program it with. I have CPS V. 06.12.05 installed on a computer running Windows 10 64 bit. As for the cable, I have the programming cable in parallel with a USB to serial cable and drivers are installed for that. CPS fires up fine but when I click File > Read Device it gives me a drop down list of ports to choose from with only one choice and that being COM3. When I click ok after selecting COM3, I get the "Couldn't open port Check whether device/RIB are powered on or not and the device to RIB and the RIB to PC connection is OK" error. Any ideas?

Are you sure you're running ASTRO25 CPS? Latest version released is around R20 or something. The version number you posted looks more like Commercial or Professional CPS.
Ah yes, wrong version of CPS, I downloaded the correct copy of CPS for ASTRO 25 radios but now when trying to read the device, I get a "Connection Error. Error context: 24 Status: 80004005"

Once you've verified your usb to serial adaptor port in device manager, try running the software in WindowsXP compatibility mode.

I use a proper Motorola USB cable and Windows7 but I do know that I have to run in XP compatibility mode to see USB as a selection.

Device manager lists the adapter as "This is not a Ptolific PL2303 please contact your supplier" not sure if that has to do with anything. I plug the adapter, the cable, and the radio all together and it gives me the option to select COM4 or USB in CPS, USB gives me the error "Radio is not detected from USB port. Please check the connection and try again" COM selection gives error mentioned above. I'm thinking it may be the operating system not playing nice with the adapter cable, anyone know any cheap laptops with a serial port?

Really? Surprising, the last version (R20 whatever it is) works fine for me running in native Win7 mode.

I ran into this problem a few weeks ago. I was using an old USB to serial cable. I bought a new one and it works fine.

Might be thinking of Astro CPS. I haven't used either one for a while so I'm probably confusing the two.

I was thinking it was the adapter, bought it cheap off eBay how every many years ago and pulled it from a bin. I'll pick up a new one from best buy tomorrow and report back

When it comes to radios don't cheap out on the important things. It's very easy to have a $300+ paper weight if you do things the cheap way. Not saying you have to get Motorola cables but when it comes to programming, having a solid setup is crucial.

Could be; I haven't programmed my VHF Astro Saber in awhile so I don't remember offhand what compatibility mode it runs in. The last version of Astro25 (which I use fairly often) works fine in Win7.

Alright guys, it turned out it was the cable, got into CPS and programmed everything with no issues other than one thing. I set up my scan list config to scan 15 channels ithin Zone 1 and have my ABC switch set to be A-Scan B-Blank C-Scan so I can turn scan on and off and the second side button to be nuisance channel delete however, on my radio there is no scan icon and it won't scan. When flipping the ABC switch, it gives the flat beep, as if its unprogrammed but in CPS it is programmed. Any ideas on how to get scan working?

Do you have a scanlist assigned to the personality?
It seems like it is, when I go into PROG>SCAN every channel has the scan icon above it indicating it's on the scan list, however when I exit PROG mode, only channel one has the scan icon above it and the scan nuisance delete along with scan toggle on/off assigned ti the ABC switch does not work and only gives a beep

I had a similar problem, but with CDM radios, with "Can't open port..." being the constant error.

As K2NEC says, you can't go on the cheap on these things, at least not forever. I EVENTUALLY solved the problem by buying a Motorola OEM cable for whatever it cost, but AFTER I spent a couple a hundred on two second-hand laptops.

I was using a USB cable for years on the CDM, then one day I got the "Can't open port" thing and could never use the USB cable again.

I'm still using a USB to program a couple of portables, waiting for the day they talk back to me, too, and stop working.

I fixed it, had to get a new serial to USB cable and that solved the problem

Professional Series CPS (R6.12.xx) doesn't like 64 bit OS. It'll give you all sorts of Comport connection errors when you try and read and write. It can be buffered via a VM though. I've not had it work at all with Windows 10.

Commercial Series CPS (R5.16-R.5.18) runs fine on 64 bit (including Windows 10).

Astro 25 CPS runs find on 64 bit Windows 10. Tuner doesn't like it if you are using a USB-Serial adapter and glitches out a lot.

Astro CPS...only runs on 32 bit hardware.

I actually got it working just fine on my 64 bit machine, radios all programmed just ironing out some kinks with the scanning

With Astro 25? See above (runs fine but "Motorola doesn't support anything past Windows 8").

I did note that USB to Serial has some issues that you'll typically only see when flashing or tuning. That being said, unless your radio has some ancient firmware, Motorola has native USB programming cables for those radios for everything except for the Spectra Plus.
