• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Motorola radio programming software:
CPS disk is$299, download is $169. Is there any reason the disk could be a better option than downloading? Will the disk have some other benefit other than not needing internet access?

$130 for shipping & handling seems a tad extreme. Motorola must pay their employees well.

My friend works for a huge state wide utility company. They do not want their company computers on the internet, so they get the discs sent to them. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter.

Disk or download

It is no big deal to make a disk for backup after a download. Whenever I can save money, that is my choice.

Motorola is funny. When I purchased my MotoTrbo subcription back in 2014, Motorola didn't have the option for Download only, or download and disk. Very rarley will I get a disk in the mail. I think the last disk I got in the mail was 11.5, and before that was 10.5, its hit and miss.

In a sad way, your post is reassuring. Thanks. I was wondering why I'm not getting disks any more even though there have been many updates since the last one I did receive (which was also Nov 2015). The download only option wasn't available when I purchased my subscription, either, so I would expect to keep getting the disks until my 3 years plays out.

Thanks everyone for the insights. I guess it's pretty much a no-brainer now!

UPDATE:

I started worrying about why I was not receiving the CPS disks since this is the option I paid for when I subscribed. I called MOL about this and was treated very politely, but ultimately I was told that in spite of the fact that I had purchased the disk delivery option, they could only send me a CD this one time and that I would have to call in and create a case each and every time I want another: They sent the following email to document that they consider the case closed.

"... The case xxxxxxxx was created in order to request information as to why he had not being receiving his discs. He was advised a disc would be sent over and unfortunately nothing could be done in regards to the previous ones. He was also advised that in order to continue receiving the discs he would need to call in..."

I've almost always downloaded the CPS updates and new firmware in order to get them as soon as they are released. I know that I'm supposed to be grateful that they let me subscribe to CPS, but I confess that it bothers a bit me that they've discontinued the full service for which I was charged without any notification, compensation, effort for correction, or even remorse.

I had Batwings on my paycheck for nearly 20 years and I admit to a general bias in their favor, but this is disappointing.
