Princess Ruby Has Gone Digital

In mid-January, I was on a cruise on the Ruby Princess and noticed 457.525, 457.55, 457.575 AND splinter frequencies in-between, are now fully digital. I heard NO analog transmissions on these frequencies. I have frequently (and recently) sailed on Princess ships and this was the first I have the use of digital. The radios I saw appeared to be Motorolas....

We just sailed on the Norwegian Sky and they are using GSM phones for most operations. I did see Motorola XPR series radios used by security and maintenance. The only DMR frequency that I was able to confirm on the ship was 467.5375 and it appeared to be a repeater. I believe the input was in the 457 MHz range but I didn't take note of it. The only analog UHF frequency I heard was 457.575 (pl 107.2). It was being used in simplex mode by the restaurant for table assignment coordination. They also used marine vhf extensively while Great Stirrup Cay, didn't see any DMR radios there.

I hope the move is slow to DMR, and w/o a Scanner to monitor them....

Still there is plenty left in Analog :)

Thanks for the info

Btw, I also heard some traffic on 462.650 MHz (GMRS 5). This was a repeater as I could hear (barely) the input side. The interesting thing was that we were nowhere near land and it didn't appear to be coming from our ship. There was a Carnival ship a few miles away.

Nothing in my notes for 462.6500 as a Cruise Ship Freq, however the input 467.6500 is commonly used

However, I can say I have worked GMRS from a Cruise Ship at ~300 miles away on a portable from my balcony

Interesting. Our cabin was on the 10th deck, so I guess anything is possible. Now that I think about it, I was able to hear the Palm Beach County (FL) TRS when we were out by Bimini, over 70 miles away.

Yup, 10 Stories High and no obstructions for miles

I'd love something like that, image the ole Oil Rigs or the East Coast Radar sites (Texas Towers) as a scanner/monitoring site
