AS with anything YMMV

I've had good results on RCCL and then, had results where they wanted proof the Radio did not Transmit
and then on the Sister line [Celebrity] was banned from bringing anything on [they held till my return] not even by the Cruise line, but by the screening and an ARMED Florida Deputy who was told by me to remove his hand from the Weapon as we were no threat - finally got his Supervisor to have him remove his hand from the gun.


I never leave home without the ham ticket in my wallet, Bill, but in this case it isn't guaranteed
to get me past the fact that the 436 is a scanner and not a ham radio.

I guess it'll leave more time for boat drinks, taking in the views and trying to win a genuine 24k gold plastic ship on a stick! ;-)

Has anyone been on the Carnival Sunshine recently since they switched to MotoTRBO? I see online reports of 457.525 and 457.550 with a whole list of "channels" from 2017. My scanner does allow for the DMR upgrade. I'm considering paying the $60 to try it out on the upcoming cruise but was hoping someone who has programmed one of these with the ARC software could give me some guidance as this will be my first DMR system?

The Carnival ships with DMR are just using DMR standalone repeaters. Best to program them as ‘DMR One Frequency’ in your Uniden Scanners.

Thank you! I found a picture of a Carnival radio on one thread that had a card listing these channels:

Channel 1- Deck
Channel 2- Engine
Channel 3- Desk
Channel 4- Medical
Channel 5- Electrical
Channel 6- Fire/OSC
Channel 7- Security
Channel 8- ???
Channel 9- Direct
Channel 15- Embark 1
Channel 16- Embark 2

So if I understand you correctly each of those channels will be a separate repeater, and separate frequency (similar to a conventional system- only digital in this case). Is that correct?

If they are DMR they will likely all be on the same freq on the same repeater.... but each "Channel" will actually be a different DMR "talkgroup"... and could be either on Slot 1 or Slot 2 of the DMR repeater. You'll need to bone up on your DMR programming for your scanner.

Each DMR standalone repeater has two slots aka two talkgroups.

One slot will have one talkgroup and the other slot will have another talkgroup.

See post #107 from the quick log I did on one of the carnival ship.

Also see post #92 from another person’s carnival DMR log.

Thanks guys. This is all new to me. I've used it for P25 and traditional Motorola trunking, but this would be my first DMR system. I'm using a Bearcat BCD325P2. I'm going out of the Port of Charleston, so I'm mainly focusing on that area and the Carnival Sunshine itself.

FRS/GMRS vs Cruise Ships

Amazing on the Frowning, its $$ in their pockets, yet ILLEGAL to use them outside of the USA. :) Maybe Carnival got caught? or they found interference to the Ships Radios and stopped selling them.
Can't imagine interference from FRS being they are in the UHF spectrum, while ship radios at 156Mhz VHF band...

Scanning for beginers!

Hi all!

I just need some help with something!

I will be going on board the cruise ship Thomson Destiny of Thomson Cruises around the Mediterranean.

And all i want in simple terms please some answers to some questions!

1. Will i be able to listen to onboard coms including bridge (I will have a cabin directly above the bridge)
2. What type of scanner will i need (not to expensive!)
3.what chanel do i tune into to listen to the operations?

Put your radio in close call mode while on the ship to tag nearby signal sources.

So I'm sailing on the Carnival Sunshine this week and despite widespread searching I've only managed to identify one DMR frequency in use. 457.5375 is operating with a Color Code of 3 and two talk groups in the 75x range. I've tried searching the entire 400mhz band and so far haven't identified any other frequencies. I haven't seen a lot of radios since we got onboard though. It appears the Cisco IP telephones are much more popular. I was expecting as many as 10+ channels, so I'm kind of baffled as to why I haven't been able to determine more.

Lots of cruise ships have internal wireless phone systems that almost all of the crew uses. It's only when they have safety drills and get close to a harbour that DMR systems gets more use as well as the marin VHF channels to talk to the harbour authorities.

Most activity will occur during Port Arrival / Departure as well as embarkation etc

Sunshine has only been noted [sent to me] on 457.5250 and 457.5500.
