JEFFERSON COUNTY - A 26-year-old man was killed late Saturday night after his Jeep went careening off a road and into a creek while he was being chased by a state trooper.

The Colorado State Patrol says the man was driving his gold 1997 Jeep Cherokee on CO 6 just before 11:15 p.m. when they tried to pull him over for weaving.

Not only did the driver fail to stop, the trooper says he tried to get away.

Troopers say the Jeep headed east on CO 6, and the chase lasted for ten minutes at speeds in the 40-mph range. That's when the driver lost control and vaulted off the right side of the road, near milepost 264, and went flying down the embankment toward Clear Creek.

The Jeep landed at the bottom of the embankment, rolled once and ejected the driver. Both the driver and Jeep landed on the ice in the middle of the creek, according to Troopers.

The man, who troopers did not identify but say is from Federal Heights, was killed in the crash.

Troopers say alcohol is suspected to have contributed to the crash. Additionally, they say reckless driving, felony eluding and poor road conditions also contributed to the crash.

According to the state patrol, the trooper's vehicle never made contact with the fleeing vehicle

I heard this last night. The supervisor was asking to spike strips instead of a PIT, due to road conditions. Sad a man had to loose his life, when maybe he just would of gone to Detox for the night.

Sorry if I seem a bit callous on this one, but it sounds like pre-emptive justice. Had he been a catch and release, the next time could have involved someone innocent. If he wasn't doing anything wrong, then he had no reason to flee.

Of course if he was drunk, had some liquid courage in him. The speeds I heard never went over 40, but on ice might as well of been going mach 1. Better he take him self out, then a bus full of nuns.
